Starting next week, people can head to the Mosaic District for drive-in movies.

The summer movie series will kick off on Friday, June 26, with “Captain Marvel,” according to a press release. People can expect a different movie on the fourth Friday of every month from June to August.

The drive-in series plans to screen “Toy Story 4” and “Jurassic Park” on July 24. The double features for Aug. 28 have not been announced yet.

People will be able to watch the movies from the seventh floor of the Market parking lot across from Moms Organic, according to the press release, which added that all of the films will have closed captioning.

Safety measures that movie-goers must follow include:

  • remaining in their cars at all times
  • designating one person per car to pick up food orders
  • only one person at a time can use the restrooms by using a text alert system

Each car will have a $28 parking fee and people will listen to the movie audio via an FM transmitter on the radio. The Mosaic District urges people to buy tickets in advance because space is limited to 75 cars.

As for food and beverages, Mosaic District is partnering with Alta Strada to offer a movie theater-inspired menu with hot dogs, popcorn and sodas, the press release said.

“All guests who order directly from the Alta Strada website will receive a complimentary bombolini or tiramisu upon selecting the ‘Free Gift’ option at checkout,” the press release said. “Other restaurants will participate in the later showings.”

The Mosaic District drive-in series follows the announcement from The Boro that the new Tysons development will also offer drive-in movies. The Boro’s series will feature movies for four weeks, starting this Friday, June 19.

Movie theaters and performing arts venues in the Tysons area have shut down the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The temporary closures come on the heels of the White House recommending that gatherings with 10 people or more be avoided.

Yesterday (Tuesday), Gov. Ralph Northam issued an order “that allows law enforcement to enforce a ban that prohibits more than 10 patrons in places such as restaurants, fitness centers and theaters,” Inside NoVa reported.

The newly opened Showplace Icon (1667 Silver Hill Drive) in The Boro is now “temporarily closed until further notice,” according to its website.

Over at Tysons Corner Center, which is open with reduced hours, AMC Tysons Corner 16 “is temporarily closed in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines,” according to the AMC website.

“It will re-open when those guidelines allow,” the site said. “Please continue to check back here for updates.”

Yesterday, the Angelika Film Center in the Mosaic District announced a temporary closure.

“The health and well-being of our guests and our theater teams is our top priority, and we believe that this step will be the most effective way to both retain that priority and mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” says a note on the theater’s website.

The theater did not say when it plans to reopen.

Tickets bought in advance –either from Angelika or from a third-party vendor — for movie showtimes that won’t play due to the closure can be refunded.

Performing arts-goers will have to wait to watch their next play or concert in the Tysons area.

Tysons’ 1st Stage Theatre announced yesterday that it’s suspending upcoming productions.

Plans for the theater’s upcoming production of “A New Brain,” which was set to run March 26-April 19, are uncertain at this point.

The Alden Theatre at the McLean Community Center is closed until April 12.

Wolf Trap is postponing all of its performances, classes and events between March 13-31.

“We are working with the artists to reschedule their performances for future dates and will share that information as it becomes available,” according to Wolf Trap’s website. “All current tickets will be honored for the rescheduled performances.”

All of the public shows between now and April 3 are postponed at The State Theatre in Falls Church.

The Studio Movie Grill at Founders Row in Falls Church will likely become more colorful with the installation of a new mural project.

Proposed themes include a collage of the universe, diverse individuals and storytelling images like film, according to the city documents, which added the dimensions will be roughly 128 by 38 feet.

“Rooted in the inclusive spirit of the community and history of Falls Church, the design’s whimsical vignettes illustrate the process of artistic ideation, creation, and interaction,” the city documents said about the art.

The mixed-use development, which is currently under construction at the corner of W. Broad and N. West streets, will include luxury apartments, retail space, the 4,693-square-foot movie theater and a 9,476-square-foot City Works Eatery and Pour House.

Though in the early stages, the proposed mural is tentatively scheduled to come back to the Planning Commission for a public hearing in June.

It is unclear when the mural will be completed.

Tysons may not have the liveliest nightlife at the moment, but that could soon change as more late-night restaurants and places to hang out open. “Tysons After Dark” will highlight a different spot every week.

Showplace Icon doesn’t officially open until March 6, but the new theater in Tysons is offering free movies starting today before its grand opening.

Earlier this week, Tysons Reporter got a tour of the 72,000-square-foot theater (1667 Silver Hill Drive) in The Boro development near the Greensboro Metro station.

The theater has 14 auditoriums ranging in size with seating for 1,795 people. Inside the auditoriums, the recliners turn into love seats when the armrest is up and people can warm up with the seat heaters.

The theaters are split between two floors. Along the hallways, movie-goers can spot posters of films from 1963 — the same year the Leesburg Pike and Route 123 interchange contract was awarded, morphing the country crossroads into an urban area.

People can dine at the ICON Bistro and The Lobby Lounge and bring food, like bacon popcorn, into the auditoriums.

A spokesperson for the theater told Tysons Reporter that the goal with the dining options is to appeal to non-movie-goers as well.

During the theater’s soft opening from today (Friday, Feb. 28) until Wednesday (March 4), people who are Extra Club Members — a free membership available online — will be able to watch free movies with free popcorn and drinks. (There’s also a paid membership option as well for people who want more perks.)

The movies on the big screen for Friday-Sunday include:

  • “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey”
  • “1917”
  • “The Gentlemen”
  • “Little Women”
  • “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
  • “Frozen 2”
  • “Jumanji: The Next Level”
  • “Knives Out”
  • “Ford v. Ferrari”
  • “Uncut Gems”
  • “Just Mercy”
  • “Dolittle”

Tickets are available an hour before each movie and must be reserved in person, according to the theater’s website.

This will be the movie theater chain’s seventh location, according to a press release.
