(Updated 11/21/19) A recruiting company in Tysons wants to hire hundreds of employees in Tysons — making them the largest job creator in recent months in Fairfax County.

In the third quarter of 2019, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority announced that 14 companies are adding 456 jobs to the county — including 358 positons in Tysons.

Randstad North America, Inc., an IT recruiting and staffing firm whose parent company is based in the Netherlands, announced they will add 300 information technology jobs in fiscal year 2020.

INADEV, another information technology company, is the runner up for job creation in Tysons for the third quarter by bringing 25 jobs to the area.

Companies in the Tysons area also topped the list for the most added jobs when FCEDA worked with 35 businesses in the second quarter.

A cycling studio plans to come to Tysons Galleria.

CycleBar is “coming soon” to the mall, according to the mall directory. Currently, CycleBar has nearby locations in Falls Church and Arlington.

The mall has also welcomed two newcomers.

A new pop-up store from Canada Goose is now open in the mall on the second level by Saks Fifth Avenue. On the first level near Sweetgreen, See’s Candies is selling candy.

A driver arrested for allegedly striking and killing a woman in the West Falls Church area is now facing additional charges for homicide and drug possession.

In August, Betty Ana Bernstein-Zabza, a Falls Church resident who worked for the State Department, was fatally hit by a truck near the intersection of Shreve Road and Hickory Street — less than a mile away from her home.

Zabza was walking near the busy W&OD Trail with a child, who was treated for minor injuries after the crash, according to Fairfax County police.

“They entered a crosswalk that connected the pathway to a sidewalk when they were hit by a stolen 2013 Nissan Titan pickup truck,” police said.

Shortly after the crash, police arrested the driver of the truck, 46-year-old South Riding resident David Alan Francis and charged him with one count of felony hit and run. At the time of the arrest, police said that Francis fled the scene uninjured and that “both speed and drugs appear to be factors.”

The police department announced today (Tuesday) that Francis faces additional charges of felony homicide, felony hit and run, aggravated involuntary manslaughter, possession of schedule I/II narcotics and driving under the influence of drugs.

“On Monday, evidence was presented to a grand jury who indicted David Alan Francis,” police said of the new charges.

Since 2009, Francis has faced 30 charges including many traffic-related ones like driving under a revoked or suspended license, operating an uninsured vehicle, speeding and improper driving, according to court records.

Francis is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond, police said.

Updated at 4 p.m. — Metropolitan Hospitality Group announced that the restaurants are expected to open in “late 2020/early 2021” at 8301 Greensboro Drive.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and an eatery serving up Mexican cuisine are some of the newcomers announced for The Boro in Tysons.

The newcomers will join a long list of stores and restaurants that have already opened or were previously announced for new mixed-use development by the Greensboro Metro station.

Today (Tuesday), the Meridian Group — the developers behind The Boro — formally announced:

• Open Road, an American bistro from Metropolitan Hospitality Group
• El Bebe, a Mexican restaurant also from Metropolitan Hospitality Group
• Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, an ice cream shop
• The Shade Store

The list also included eateries and stores that Tysons Reporter has previously reported were coming to The Boro, including CaliBurger, Paper Source, F45 Training and a City National Bank branch.

“These additions will be a perfect complement to the diverse mix of uses within The Boro District and will help create the type of livable, urban environment we envisioned from the start,” Tom Boylan, the senior vice president of the Meridian Group, said in a press release.

Additionally, Meridian Group said that the 14-screen ShowPlace ICON theater at The Boro “is slated to open in the first quarter of 2020.”

The Town of Vienna welcomed a new natural health center last week.

The Health Improvement Center held a grand opening on Thursday (Nov. 14) at 407 Church Street NE, Suite C.

Founded in 1997 and run by Dr. Katie Thompson, the center offers chiropractic care, applied kinesiology, nutrition, allergy clearing technique and weight loss programs.

The center is open from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is closed on weekends, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

After Bey Lounge got in trouble over the Town of Vienna’s noise ordinance, the location’s owners decided to pivot and convert the space into a grocery store.

The new supermarket (303 NE Mill Street) opened around a month ago, according to a store clerk. It offers customers a variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare, including dates, sesame paste and dried garbanzo beans.

The owners are trying to replace the current “Bey Lounge” sign with one that says “LB Food Market,” according to town documents.

Customers can enter through Wooden Bakery next door and are free to stop for a snack while they shop since both establishments are owned by the same people.

The bakery and store are both open 9 a.m-midnight Sunday-Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m. Friday-Saturday.

Though open for operation, the store is not yet fully stocked yet and staff said it will be at least three weeks before they are ready for a grand opening.

Tysons Reporter checked out the location and saw that though most of the dry goods seem to be stocked, the freezers and refrigerators in the back are still empty.

• Christmas Market — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church (1301 Trap Road) — At this market, people will be selling various items including baked goods, candles, wreaths and various gifts. Gift wrapping is available on-site and Santa will make an appearance for photos as well.
• 50s’ Sock Hop — 7 to 9 p.m. at Vienna Community Center, Auxiliary Gym (120 SE Cherry Street) — This event invites community members to come together for a friendly evening of dancing. Admission is $5 at the door and free for kids under 5.
• Apple Brandy Bottling Party — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Falls Church Distillers (442 S. Washington Street) — This party celebrates the release of the distillery’s new batch of Apple Brandy. This event is free but organizers ask that attendees RSVP through email.
• Winter Walk of Lights — 5 to 10 p.m. at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens (9750 Meadowlark Gardens Court) — This event allows community members to enjoy holiday lights at the gardens. Hot drinks and smores are available for purchase on-site. Tickets are $14 and $8 for kids.

Sunday (Nov. 24)

• Sensory-Friendly Santa — 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Tysons Galleria (2001 International Drive) — Autism Speaks partnered with Tysons Galleria to invite children of all abilities to enjoy the Christmas festivities. The event page said that this will provide a calm environment for kids to meet Santa.
• Sutton Foster at Wolf Trap — 6:30 p.m. at Wolf Trap (1635 Trap Road) — Tony Award-winning singer Sutton Foster will take the stage as one of Wolf Trap’s last performances for November. Tickets to her performance start at $67.
• Hope Family Fun Festival — 2 to 5 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School (601 S. Oak Street) — This festival allows community members and families to come together for an afternoon of face painting, moon bounces, yoga lessons, games and prizes for kids.

The Town of Vienna has hired a business development manager in Arlington County to help revitalize local businesses.

The town recently announced that Natalie Monkou, an Annadale resident, will be the town’s first-ever economic development manager.

Monkou worked in Arlington County for four years, serving as a liaison between the county and three business improvement districts, according to a press release. She also worked as the special assistant to Prince George’s County’s deputy chief of economic development.

“There is so much change happening in Vienna and around the region right now,” Monkou said in the town’s press release. “Because the area is transforming, it’s definitely an opportunity to think strategically and creatively about what economic development and viability will mean for our community and how we can remain competitive and be inclusive and strong.”

Monkou plans to hold a “listening tour,” where she will visit local businesses, according to the press release.

“I plan to get feedback from as many community stakeholder groups as possible,” she said.

Town Manager Mercury Payton said that Monkou stood out because of her economic development experience in Prince George’s and Arlington counties.

Payton’s first goal for the new role is to connect with more businesses so that the town can better learn how to help them more, according to the press release. Secondly, Payton wants Monkou to collaborate with Fairfax County’s economic development office.

“This is an exciting time for the Town,” Payton said. “Having a strong person in this new and critical function may be a catalyst to achieving levels of success that the Town hasn’t yet experienced.”

Drivers should plan to avoid Scotts Crossing Road in Tysons this week due to a series of closures at night.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that the road will be closed between Jones Branch Drive and the I-495 Express Lanes starting tonight (Nov. 18) until Friday, Nov. 22, from 9:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

The closures are related to paving as part of the Jones Branch Connector project, according to VDOT. Several detours will be in place for drivers.

The Jones Branch Connector project expects to have two lanes in each direction open by the end of the year and final completion in early 2020, according to VDOT.

The Town of Vienna has a new, two-story carwash along Maple Avenue.

Flagship Carwash announced that it opened on Friday (Nov. 15) and plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 19), according to a press release.

The company claims that the two-story design allows the carwash to utilize the land. “It completely encompasses all aspects of the wash process keeping our neighbors happy and free from noise and trash, which is common with this type of business,” Owner Guy Paolozzi said in a statement.

In addition to the full-service wash, cars can also get a free vacuuming, according to the press release. Flagship Carwash’s Vienna location is open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Sunday.

“All services are indoors so customers and more importantly employees don’t have to brave the weather. Vienna is a great community, and we are proud to be the first MAC application to be built,” Paolozzi said.

Below the carwash, Chick-fil-A will occupy the ground floor of the building at 540 W. Maple Avenue. The chicken chain announced on Facebook that the new location is set to hold a grand opening on Thursday (Nov. 21).
