Five people burst into an apartment in Falls Church Sunday night in what Fairfax County Police are describing as a home invasion robbery.
The crime happened around 10 p.m. in a condominium community on the 7700 block of New Providence Drive, near Pine Spring Elementary and across the lake from 2941 Restaurant.
“The victims were inside an apartment playing video games when someone knocked on their door,” FCPD said in a crime report. “Upon answering the door, five suspects forced their way into the apartment, assaulting one victim and stealing electronics and other personal items.”
“The victim sustained minor injuries,” the crime report continues. “The five suspects were described as black men, in their early 20’s, one who was 6’3″, had dreadlocks and wore a hoodie.”

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors decision earlier this week to trim some pension benefits long enjoyed by county employees has been unpopular in some quarters but [outgoing] board chairman Sharon Bulova says the decision was necessary.
“This board, and future boards, must always examine county programs to ensure we are achieving a balance between the benefit of that service and the affordability to taxpayers,” Bulova said in a statement.
“A majority of our board felt strongly that our existing defined benefit plan serves the county well and helps us to attract and retain the stable workforce we need to provide the quality services our constituents value, depend upon and appreciate.” However, she noted that the approved changes are “needed to ensure that retirees will continue to have a comfortable pension in their retirement years.”
Tuesday’s vote will end the pre-Social Security supplement for future county employees and will eliminate an additional allowance that increases the retirement annuity by 3 percent.

(Updated at 11 a.m.) A Vienna man has been arrested and charged with a bias crime at a Korean-American church in Dunn Loring.
Fairfax County Police say the man entered the Church For All Nations at 8526 Amanda Place around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday and “destroyed a glass altar.”
“Our officers found Laith Faisal, 26, of Vienna, inside and arrested him for destruction of property and entering property with the intent to damage,” said FCPD.
In its crime report, FCPD described the incident as a bias crime but did not elaborate further. Police spokesman 2nd Lt. John Lieb told Tysons Reporter that “the case remains active and information regarding the offender’s suspected motivation cannot be released.”
The damage is estimated at more than $1,000, according to police. As a result of the size of the loss and the circumstances, Faisal is facing two felony charges.

Virginia voters are in a positive mood and are feeling good about Amazon HQ2, the Equal Rights Amendment, sports betting and casinos, according to the latest poll by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University. They also want their share of the state’s windfall from tax reform.
By more than two to one, Virginia voters approve of the deal that will bring part of Amazon’s east coast headquarters to Virginia. Overall, 68% approve and 30% disapprove.
Voters support legalizing sports betting (63%) and casinos (58%) and want any related tax revenue to support education and the general fund. But 43% worry that legalization will promote gambling addiction.

It’s the holiday season and the malls are crowded. Parking spots, especially those close to entrances, are at a premium – even more so for people with a handicapped.
So, Fairfax County officials are trying a new idea to keep those accessible spots free for those who really need them. They’re calling it “empathy parking.” Signs saying “Think of Me, Park Legally” are being placed under the standard ADA accessible parking signs.
It’s a project of the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging and the Fairfax Area Disability Services Board.

For all of the new stuff coming to Tysons, there is still a sense that those who live and work here want more.
With the Biergarten and the new Palladium, there’s more nightlife than before. Yet only 6 percent of respondents to a recent poll described Tysons as a fun place to go out at night.
Likewise, there are plenty of restaurants in Tysons proper, but via social media we hear grumblings about there being too many chains and not enough interesting, independent eateries.

Fairfax County Police are investigating an overnight burglary at a gas station in McLean.
Police say a man broke into the Chesterbrook Excel station just before 2 a.m. Friday and stole cigarettes. The burglary was discovered when employees found a garage bay window shattered.
