Del. Mark Keam (D-35hth) and several other Virginia lawmakers are looking to honor the late Clarene Vickery, who founded the Parkwood School in Vienna.
After founding the school in 1956, Vickery served as its director and owner for more than 60 years. Vickery also helped create the Virginia Association of Early Childhood Education and the Providence Baptist Church in Tysons.
For her 100th birthday, several public officials recognized her achievements with a formal resolution during the 2018 session of the Virginia General Assembly.
Vickery died last year at the age of 101.
Now Keam, along with Del. Ken Plum (D-36th), State Sen. J. Chapman Petersen (D-34th), Del. Vivian Watts (D-39th), have a formal resolution for the 2020 General Assembly session to celebrate her life.
“Clarene Vickery impacted her community in meaningful ways outside of education,” the resolutions says, noting she was the president of the Ayr Hill Garden Club in Vienna, grand marshall of the 2006 Vienna Halloween Parade and an active member of the Vienna Baptist Church for 65 years.
Both houses of the Virginia General Assembly have agreed to the resolution, which is expected to be presented to Vickery’s family.

While the eatery is currently closed, an employee said that the owners hope to begin serving food again within the next week.
The owners haven’t announced if Kochin Kitchen’s menu will be similar to Aditi Streetside Indian.

Vienna Town Councilmember Pasha Majdi announced that he is joining the race for the mayor’s seat in the spring election.
Majdi was first elected to the council in 2014 after serving on the Town Business Liaison Committee, according to his town bio.
So far, Majdi is competing against councilmembers Linda Colbert and Howard Springsteen, who announced their campaigns at the first Town Council meeting of the year.
“I’m running for mayor because Vienna is my hometown and I want to keep it a small town,” Majdi said in a statement. “Vienna should be an independent, green oasis that is a sharp contrast to Tysons, not a housing district for Tysons.”
More from the statement:
My vision for the next 10 years is to protect residential neighborhoods and streets to keep Vienna the best place to raise a family in Northern Virginia, apply smart growth principles for Maple Avenue that control and mitigate traffic, and build a Town square around Church Street and the W&OD trail.
The terms for both Majdi and Colbert expire in June this year, while Springsteen’s term expires in June 2021.
Laurie DiRocco, who has been the town’s mayor since 2014, announced in December that she will not seek re-election.
The Vienna election is May 5.

Vienna police say that a crash late Saturday night (Jan. 18) caused a power outage.
Police said that a vehicle traveling northbound in the 500 block of Hillcrest Drive ran off the road and struck a utility pole, causing it to collapse on top of the vehicle along with the power lines.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m.
“The three occupants fled the scene before officers arrived,” police said. “The power company responded immediately to shut off the power and make repairs.”
After a search, police said they found the 21-year-old driver from Reston. He was released on his signature.
Shortly after midnight, police say that a drunk man in the 600 block of Hillcrest Drive was disrupting police investigating the hit-and-run.
“Upon the officers’ interaction with the man, they detected signs of impairment,” police said.
Police charged the man, a 23-year-old from Chantilly, with being drunk in public, and he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
In a separate incident, a Vienna resident told the police that a stranger hacked his Snapchat account last Thursday (Jan. 16) and used his identity to solicit money from one of his friends, police say.

Two Orange Line Metro stations will be closed this weekend due to preparations for the upcoming summer shutdown, according to the WMATA website.
Both the Vienna and Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro stops will be closed on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 25-26) to let crews prepare for the Summer Platform Improvement Project, the website said.
The summer project will include the addition of slip-resistant tiles, updated LED lighting, charging ports and lit handrails.
This weekend, travelers can expect buses to replace trains between the Vienna and West Falls Church stops.
Besides those two stops, the Metro is scheduled to run trains every 12 to 15 minutes.
The Silver Line will not be affected by the work this weekend and will run on a normal schedule, according to WMATA.

The “coming soon” sign has been outside Chi Mc for a few months, but diners may have to wait a little longer for the eatery to open in Vienna.
Tysons Reporter first learned of the Korean eatery’s plans to come to Vienna via a permit to serve wine and beer in June 5.
In November, Tysons Reporter saw “coming soon” and the “Chi Mc Korean Friend Chicken” signs at the spot in Danor Plaza (126 Branch Road SE).
Jon Weiss, the vice president of leasing for Rosenthal Properties, told Tysons Reporter that he believes the eatery has faced some permitting delays — “nothing unusual.”
Chi Mc might open at the end of January, Weiss said.
Chi Mc, which means “chicken and beer” in Korean, currently has locations in Annandale, Alexandria and Chantilly, according to its website.
