Tysons Corner Center is welcoming Doughnuttery to its mall this weekend.

Known for its mini doughnuts, the New York-based chain is opening its doors to the public on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 3 p.m. 

“We really like this mall. It’s convenient. It’s close by. It’s well-known. It’s a tourist attraction,” said Leyla Khater and Katherine Ronckovitz, the owners of the new Doughnuttery. “We knew we wanted to be here.”

Khater and Ronckivitz had been thinking of partnering to start a business for a long time when they found out Doughnuttery was franchising and decided that opening the Tysons location would be a good fit for their entrepreneurial spirit, according to Ronckivitz.

The store was initially supposed to open in March but was delayed due to the pandemic. They put opening procedures on hold when the shutdown began, but once the government began loosening restrictions, they were able to move forward again. 

For their grand opening this weekend, they will have social distancing markers on the floor and masks to hand out, in addition to wearing masks themselves, according to Khater. 

Doughnuttery was founded in 2012 in New York City. The store currently has three locations in New York and other locations across the country. They offer dozens of different doughnut flavors and several dipping sauces, according to Ronckivitz.

The owners are also excited to bring catering with custom glazes and patterns for any event to Virginia.

“We are two women entrepreneurs, and we didn’t give up despite the challenges we faced through COVID,” said Ronckivitz. “We have daughters and we want to be their example in showing them that we didn’t give up.”

A new Indian restaurant is now open in the Tysons area.

Bansari Indian Cuisine held its grand opening on Sunday, July 19, at 2750 Gallows Road in Merrifield, according to a Facebook post from the restaurant. Diners can find it near Lost Dog Cafe — between the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station and the Mosaic District.

The restaurant posted that it offers patio dining, take-out and delivery. People can order from the restaurant on Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub and Seamless.

The menu includes a variety of dishes, including butter chicken, tandoori chicken, hakka noodles, egg curry, lamb curry and biryani.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday-Sunday, according to the restaurant’s website.

Doughnuttery plans to hold a grand opening in Tysons in early August.

The doughnut eatery shared on Facebook that the grand opening is set for Saturday, Aug. 8, at Tysons Corner Center. Doughnuttery will occupy a kiosk on the first level by H&M, according to the mall’s website.

Started in 2012, the chain specializes in mini doughnuts. The online menu features nearly four dozen flavors, including apple cider, lemon pop, green tea, fruit cereal and chai.

Currently, Doughnuttery has locations in New York and Arizona.

Teriyaki Way is now serving diners in Tysons Corner Center.

The mall posted on Facebook on Friday, July 17, about the opening.

The Japanese grill serves up a variety of teriyaki dishes, bento and ramen, along with side dishes like spring rolls and dumplings, according to its online menu. People can order pick-up and delivery from the eatery, according to its website.

Diners can find Teriyaki Way on the first level in the food court.

Wawa plans to open its first store in the Town of Vienna next Thursday (July 16).

The store at 465 Maple Avenue W. used to house a Coldwell Banker branch. Now, the building has been retrofitted — the first time ever for Wawa, according to a press release.

To commemorate the opening, a ribbon cutting will happen with social distancing outside the store on the morning of its opening. Wawa is encouraging people to watch a celebratory video and take part in an online contest for limited-edition Vienna Wawa t-shirts.

The store will open at 8 a.m. on Thursday, according to the press release.

Roughly 40 employees will work at the 6,290-square-foot store, which will offer Tesla charging stations. People who don’t want to venture outside for hoagies can get food and drinks delivered from the store via DoorDash and Uber Eats.

The press release detailed Wawa’s COVID-19 measures to reduce the risk of spreading the virus:

Wawa made several key changes to ensure it has the safest, most convenient store environment. The changes include launch of The Wawa Clean Force, a dedicated and trained sanitizing swat team working at each store every day with one job: keeping Wawa stores clean, sanitized and safe. Additional protections and policies include masks and gloves for all associates; clear plastic safety guards at check out and food-service counters; even more frequent hand washing standards; and wellness temperature checks for associates before each shift. For customers, social distancing with friendly visual markers and more hand-sanitizer stations have been added in common areas.

Wawa also plans to launch an initiative that will donate $1,000 from the Vienna store’s first week of sales to the Capital Area Food Bank and donate $1,000 each and hoagies to charities picked by Vienna’s police and fire departments and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, the press release said.

Additionally, people will be able to make donations to support military personnel and their families until Sunday, July 19, at any Wawa store, the press release said.

As of today, South Block is now open to the public in the Town of Vienna.

The juice and smoothie bar has outdoor patio seating, along with indoor seating at half capacity, at 207 E. Maple Avenue, according to a spokesperson. South Block was previously located at Jammin Java.

The menu includes cold-pressed juice, toast and salad, smoothies and bowls, along with smoothie bowl kits that don’t require a blender, the spokesperson said.

Customers can place orders for pick-up and delivery via the South Block and Uber Eats.

Leading up to this week, South Block held a soft opening last week.

A new pizza joint is here: baddpizza has officially opened its doors in McLean.

The pizzeria held a private pre-opening event on Friday and Saturday, according to a Facebook post. Now, the eatery at 6263 Old Dominion Drive is open for business, baddpizza tweeted today.

Baddpizza, which also has locations in South Riding and Falls Church, offers Buffalo-style food. The menu isn’t only pizza — diners can find hot wings, salads, subs and desserts as well.

Joel Salamone, the eatery’s owner, previously told Tysons Reporter that baddpizza has a sweeter sauce than most pizzerias and places toppings up to the edge.

The McLean location is open from 3-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, according to its website.

South Block is now opening the doors to its new home in the Town of Vienna.

The juice and smoothie bar left its location at Jammin Java and plans to officially open next week at 207 E. Maple Avenue.

Amir Mostafavi, the owner, shared on the public Facebook group Vienna VA Foodies yesterday that the new location is doing a soft opening this week via Uber Eats from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The menu includes cold-pressed juice, toast and salad, smoothies and bowls.

Mostafavi said that Monday, July 6, will be the spot’s official opening date.

“We are so excited to be a part of this amazing community! I grew up in McLean… so this spot hits really close to ‘home’ for me!” Mostafavi wrote.

As Northern Virginia continues to ease COVID-19 restrictions, Tysons-area restauranteurs are not only unveiling new eateries but also re-envisioning dining experiences.

Restaurant owners shared with Tysons Reporter their varying reopening plans.

Solace Brewing Company, a collaboration of D.C. restauranteurs Eric and Ian Hilton and BlackFinn Ameripub co-founder Steve Ryan, was originally poised to open a new location in Falls Church by May 1.

But the opening got delayed due to the pandemic, Jon Humerick, Solace’s co-founder and director of operations, said.

“When everything started, we obviously had to put everything on hold,” said Humerick. 

The brewery, boasting several unique offerings of in-house IPAs, now plans to open within the next two weeks, operating under Phase 2 guidelines requiring seating at half-capacity for indoor and outdoor dining. 

Taqueria Loca, a Mexican restaurant run by the Great American Restaurants group (GAR), debuted a “ghost kitchen” in Vienna in addition to their Sterling location before Northern Virginia began its transition into Phase 2.

This meant that they were available online and cooking in the kitchens for curbside pickup and delivery — however, they were not serving customers in-person, according to Jon Norton, the CEO of GAR.

“We are also creating a ‘patio and beer garden’ in the valet area of Coastal Flats [Tysons Corner] so that guests may begin to enjoy the Taqueria Loca experience in a physical space as well,” according to Norton. 

As of June 12, all GAR restaurants officially reopened at half-capacity.

Shipgarten, a new food and dining concept from the owners of the now-closed Tysons Biergarten, was originally planning to open in June. However, they are now pushing their opening until the end of Phase 3. 

“We are going to use paper products and more disposable items like disposable menus,” Managing Partner Matt Rofougaran said in describing the safety measures they will be taking.

In addition, there will be plexiglass sneezeguards to separate the bartenders from the customers, and the tables in the 30,000-square-foot facility will be separated by 10 feet rather than the 6-foot guideline to ensure extra distance. 

“We’re going to have plenty of room for social distancing,” Rofougaran said.

Don’t expect the traditional grand opening celebrations when Wegmans debuts its brand new store next to Capital One’s headquarters this fall, the grocery chain says.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, Wegmans announced yesterday (Tuesday) that grand opening events are a no-go for its upcoming stores this year, including the Tysons one.

“As we keep the safety of our employees and customers a top priority, we’ve had to rethink how we open these stores,” according to a press release. “While we love the excitement of opening morning, with customers anxiously awaiting to see their new Wegmans, we know this isn’t possible as the need to maintain social distancing remains.”

Instead, the grocer plans to share a “targeted timeframe” for when each store will open.

Once customers are allowed inside, shoppers can expect a line to enter, along with limitations on how many people can be in the store at a given time, the press release said.

Additionally, Wegmans said that its three stores opening this year will all have online ordering via curbside pickup and delivery: “We encourage customers to take advantage of these services.”

The 80,000-square-foot store (1835 S. Capital One Drive) is expected to employ roughly 480 people and will include a Market Café with indoor and outdoor seating and The Burger Bar.

The building that the store will be in also plans to include residential units, parking and a 1.2-acre rooftop park atop the building.
