(Updated at 11:40 a.m.) A reported power outage that hit downtown Falls Church this morning (June 18) is now resolved.
As of 9:05 a.m., Dominion reported that the power outage was affecting 224 customers on the northwestern side of the intersection of Route 7 and N. Washington Street (Route 29). By 11:40 a.m., the power outage was no longer listed on the company’s map of reported power outages.
The City of Falls Church tweeted earlier this morning that the power outage affected City Hall and the community center, which are both open, and the Mary Riley Styles Public Library, which had power restored around 10:15 a.m.
The cause of the power outage is unknown at this time.

A fire is now out in a Falls Church apartment.
Firefighters from the Arlington County Fire Department and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to the apartment fire around 11:30 a.m. today (Friday), ACFD tweeted.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the kitchen fire in a two-story garden apartment in the Falls Chase and Covent Gardens Condominiums (1306 S. Washington Street), the City of Falls Church tweeted at 11:56 p.m.
A westbound lane of traffic on S. Washington Street remains blocked, AFCD tweeted at 12:05 p.m.
The fire marshall is currently investigating the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.

An 82-year-old man from Falls Church died after he was struck on I-495 near Tysons on Saturday (June 8).
Barrington Holt was driving his 2014 Honda Accord northbound on I-495 when he ran off the right side of the interstate and struck a concrete barrier and a guard rail, Corinne Geller, a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, said.
Holt got out of his car and tried to cross the northbound lanes of I-495 when he walked in front of a northbound tractor-trailer.
“The tractor-trailer tried to avoid Holt by braking suddenly, but was unable to avoid striking the man,” Geller said. “The tractor-trailer was then rear-ended by a northbound tractor-trailer.”
The fatal crash occurred less than a mile south of Route 7 around 12:30 a.m.
Holt died at the scene, Geller said. The tractor-trailer drivers, who were both wearing seat belts, were not injured.
Virginia State Police Trooper L. Vajglova is investigating a fatal crash in Fairfax County, Geller said.

An upcoming meeting will provide the latest information on the Founders Row development currently underway in Falls Church.
Mill Creek Residential’s mixed-use development plans to have more than 300 luxury apartments and more than 90,000 square feet of retail, including a 4,693-square-foot Studio Movie Grill and a 9,476-square-foot City Works Eatery and Pour House.
According to Mill Creek Residential:
Modera Founders Row will consist of 322 studio, one- and two-bedroom homes contained within five stories with an average square footage of 940 and den/office layouts available. A separate age-restricted community will feature an additional 72 luxury homes reserved for adults 55 years and older. Shared community amenities will include a resident clubhouse with connected business center, library, game room, kitchen and bar, two 24-hour club-quality fitness studios, pet spa, hotel-inspired pool, outdoor social area featuring grills and fire pits, self-serve package lockers, coffee bar and controlled-access garage parking.
Additionally, some of the apartments include quartz countertops, wine refrigerators and private balconies and patios.
Located at the corner of W. Broad and N. West streets, Founders Row broke ground in February, Patch reported. The 4-acre site was once home to a Sunoco gas station, 7-Eleven and several small businesses.
The meeting is set for 5 p.m. next Wednesday (June 12) at the MCR construction trailer on the construction site, located near the old 7-Eleven.

A new burger joint is coming to a Falls Church spot near Route 50.
BurgerIM says it’s “coming soon” to 6410 Arlington Blvd, Suite 196A on its list of locations.
Located near Seven Corners, the spot is located on the ground floor retail below the Loren apartment building. (Fun fact: the building is named after Falls Church resident and writer Loren Pope.)
Headquartered in California, the national chain spans 15 states and has plans to operate about 500 spots by the end of the year, according to its website.
The Falls Church spot is the first one in the Tysons area for the chain, which is opening other Northern Virginia locations in Herndon and South Riding.
Fairfax County police are investigating a burglary of a home in the Fall Church area.
The incident occurred at 7800 Shreve Road around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 31.
“Someone entered through an unlocked window and stole jewelry,” according to the police report.

Fairfax County Police arrested a convicted sex offender from Vienna after he tried to attend to enter an elementary school in the Falls Church area.
The incident occurred yesterday (Thursday) around 3 p.m. at Shrevewood Elementary School (7525 Shreve Road).
“While trying to attend a school event with an acquaintance, a man attempted to check into the school using the automated visitor management system, the man’s name was flagged as being on the sex offender registry,” the police report said. “School staff denied him entry into the school and called police.”
Cornejo was arrested and charged with “entering school property after a violent sex offense,” according to police. He is being held at the Adult Detention Center without bond.
According to Virginia’s sex offender registry, a man named Alonso Bruno Cornejo, who lives in Vienna, was convicted in 2011 for sex trafficking of a juvenile.
An FBI press release from 2011 said that Alonso Bruno Cornejo Ormeno was sentenced to 292 months — roughly 24 years — in prison for “sex trafficking runaway females as part of his juvenile prostitution business that serviced clients throughout northern Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C., and Maryland.”

Stuff the Bus, a charity drive where donors try to fill a bus with food for local pantries, is coming to multiple locations throughout the Tysons area in June.
The event helps to refill the stocks of a diverse range of local charities with canned goods and other non-perishable supplies.

- Falls Church Giant — 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at 1230 W. Broad Street, Falls Church — The drive will benefit the Falls Church Community Service Council, a coalition of churches and human service organizations in Falls Church assisting low-income individuals and families in short-term or emergency needs.
Saturday (June 15)
- McLean Giant — 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at 1454 Chain Bridge Road, McLean — The drive will benefit Share, Inc., a nonprofit in McLean that provides financial assistance, distribution of food, used clothing, recycled furniture and transportation services for seniors. The organization is all volunteer run.
Saturday (June 22)
- Vienna Giant — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at 359 Maple Avenue East, Vienna — The drive will benefit Committee for Helping Others, an all-volunteer organization that provides clothing, furniture, meals on wheels, transportation and emergency food aid or financial assistance.

- Safeway at Pan Am — 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 3043 Nutley Street, Fairfax — The drive will benefit Food for Others, a regional emergency food distribution service.

Two McLean and one Falls Church public schools are recent recipients of a statewide education award.
Five schools statewide earned the 2019 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, according to a press release from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
The local schools to receive the award include:
- Chesterbrook Elementary School (1753 Kirby Road)
- Cooper Middle School (977 Balls Hill Road)
- Longfellow Middle School (2000 Westmoreland Street)
One other FCPS school — Carson Middle School in Herndon — received the award. The fifth school was Jamestown Elementary School in Arlington.
“The schools and school divisions that have earned these awards are not only the highest-performing schools in our Commonwealth, but are among the best schools in the nation,” Gov. Ralph Northam said in a press release.
The Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence is the highest recognition in the Virginia Index of Performance awards for advanced learning and achievement, according to the press release.
