After a series of vandalisms and an assault, the owner of Skorpio’s Maggio’s Greek Family Restaurant is unsure why she has been the target.

The restaurant was vandalized about half of a dozen times this winter, and owner Sherry Maggio was the victim of an assault in January by a man who spat at her and threw hot coffee on her, according to Vienna police reports.

Though a 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with simple assault and battery, Vienna police are still investigating the vandalism incidents, according to the police department.

In one incident, ketchup was smeared on the windows of the restaurant and the restaurant’s van, while in another incident, “tire slime” was put on the sidewalk, furniture and statue in front of the restaurant, according to Vienna police reports.

A police spokesperson said the department doesn’t understand the motive behind the vandalism.

“It’s kind of strange,” the spokesperson said. “The owners are really nice… I can’t imagine why someone would do that.”

After the assault, the man charged with the crime posted inflammatory comments about Maggio on his Instagram accounts, calling her names, accusing her of lying to the police and claiming he can get away with anything because he has connections within the court system.

A police spokesperson declined to say whether or they have a suspect for the vandalism cases, saying that the incidents are currently under investigation.

The police department is trying to review video footage, the spokesperson said.

Though the vandalism incidents haven’t caused monetary damages, clean-up has taken significant time and labor, Maggio said, adding that she is worried about similar incidents happening in the future.

“It took my guys almost an hour to scrub everything off the sidewalk,” she said about the incident involving the tire slime.  

Maggio said she is keeping track of details and evidence with the incidents, so she’ll have a paper trail.

Tysons Reporter is back with its monthly crime map showing where the incidents occurred in Fairfax County Police Department’s McLean District Station.

We went ahead and pulled together all of the incidents noted for the McLean District Station in FCPD crime recaps from Dec. 1-31, weeded out the ones that are not in the Tysons Reporter coverage area and plotted them in the interactive map above.

The McLean District Station covers crime in Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church, McLean, Tysons and Great Falls.

The map only includes information from FCPD and does not include reports to the police departments in the Town of Vienna or the City of Falls Church.

Fairfax County’s weekday police recaps are not comprehensive lists of every incident and the addresses are approximate. FCPD also notes that information in the recaps “is generally based on initial reports made to the police department.”

Haycock Elementary School recently told families who will head the school for the time being after the school’s newly hired principal faces charges related to alleged abuse of students at a different school.

Scott Bloom was hired as the principal for Haycock Elementary School in Falls Church in August and was placed on leave in September involving a personnel matter.

Bloom, a 39-year-old Reston resident, was indicted for allegedly failing to report assaults on students with intellectual disabilities during his time as the principal at Freedom Hill Elementary School in Vienna.

August Frattali became the interim principal in September.

In a letter to Haycock families on Monday (Dec. 16), Region 2 Assistant Superintendent Fabio Zuluaga said that Frattali will continue that role.

“We are in the process of updating the policy and regulation that covers the procedures for reporting cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to ensure that all of us understand our reporting obligations,” Zuluaga said in the letter.

FCPS Administration was made aware of these allegations in September, following Mr. Bloom’s appointment at Haycock. Staff members under investigation were immediately removed from their positions and placed on leave for the duration of the investigation.

We are saddened and distressed by these allegations involving our employees. There is no greater responsibility of a school system than the safety and well-being of our students and, as a result of these incidents, we have learned that we need to do more. Our teachers and staff have been trained annually in best practices and legal requirements regarding mandated reporting of suspected abuse and received additional training this year to reinforce reporting requirements.

An MS-13 gang member from Falls Church has been sentenced for his role in a violent assault in a local park.

A federal judge sentenced 19-year-old Marlon Edgardo Huezo Rivera, known as “Oscuro,” of Falls Church to 38 months in prison “for his role and participation in a violent gang-related assault of a victim with multiple bats,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Earlier this year, 21-year-old Jose Ochoa Del-Cid, 21, also from Falls Church, was sentenced to five and half years in prison for conspiring with other members to lure the victim under false pretenses to James Lee Park in Falls Church.

Huezo Rivera was linked to the Chilangueras clique of MS-13 in Northern Virginia and was the final charged defendant to be sentenced in this case, according to the press release.

“This purpose of this senseless assault was to serve MS-13’s warped code of violence and overarching mission of instilling fear through violence,” G. Zachary Terwilliger, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a statement. “Huezo Rivera’s conduct demonstrates his contempt for the law and his total disregard for the safety of the people who make up this community.”

Rivera and other members and associates of MS-13 believed the victim was cooperating with law enforcement, falsely representing himself as a member of MS-13, and disparaging the Silvas clique of MS-13. Vienna police arrested a 44-year-old Fairfax man who was allegedly acting disorderly in the Vienna Inn (120 E. Maple Avenue).

After being asked to help with a “disorderly subject” shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 11), police told the man that he needed to leave, according to the police report.

“While the man was leaving the business, officers noticed he was having trouble walking, poor coordination, and subsequently fell,” the report said. “For the man’s safety, officers took him into custody for being Drunk In Public. The man became aggressive toward the officers while he was being placed under arrest.”

Police said the behavior escalated while they transported the man to the Adult Detention Center:

The man continued to act belligerent, yelling profanities at Officer Murray. When exiting the cruiser at the jail, the man spat at several officers assisting Officer Murray. At the magistrate’s office, the man became even more aggressive and kicked Officer Murray. Officer Murray secured arrest warrants for Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Drunk In Public.

Police said the man was remanded to the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office.

Fairfax County police say that an intoxicated woman kicked and tried to bite police late last night (Wednesday) after being arrested at Tysons Corner Center.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. “Mall Security called [the] police to report two people engaged in suspicious activity,” according to a police report.

Police arrested a 43-year-old woman from Leesburg for being drunk in public. While the woman was getting into the police car, she “kicked two officers and attempted to bite a third,” the report said.

Police also charged her with three counts of assault on law enforcement.

Fairfax County police arrested a Falls Church man after he allegedly wounded a man during a fight in a residential area by Haycock Elementary School.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, in the 2200 block of Orchid Drive.

“Officers responded to the area for two men fighting,” according to the police report. “Officers found and arrested the suspect nearby.”

The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police charged 50-year-old Spyros Pagonis with unlawful wounding.

In a separate incident, police arrested a Maryland man for grand larceny at a Home Depot (2815 Merrilee Drive) in Merrifield around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 11).

“Officers responded for a larceny at the Home Depot and found store security fighting with the suspect when they arrived,” police said.

Police said that the suspect “pulled away and ran from officers” while being arrested, but was caught after a short foot pursuit.

“It was learned that the suspect had committed grand larceny at another Home Depot just before coming to this location and had over $3,000 worth of stolen items with him,” police said.

Police charged 36-year-old Derik Henderson with grand larceny, assault and resisting arrest.

Del-Cid was sentenced to more than five and a half years in prison.

The FBI’s WFO’s Safe Streets/HIDTA Task Force for Northern Virginia, which is tasked with dismantling violent gangs in the D.C.-area, investigated the case.

Fairfax County police arrested a 39-year-old man on Sunday (July 28) after he allegedly displayed a knife and resisted arrest.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 8600 block of Leesburg Pike between Koons Tysons Toyota and the Audi Tysons Corner Service Department.

Officers saw a man who appeared to be intoxicated walking toward oncoming traffic. The man took an aggressive stance toward officers and displayed a knife. Officers were able to de-escalate the situation and convince the man to drop the knife. The man began to resist arrest by pulling his arms away and trying to break free.

Police arrested and charged Jon Lincoln of no fixed address with assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Fairfax County police arrested a Sterling man late Monday (July 22) night for allegedly driving recklessly and ramming a police car, police said.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 8100 block of Old Dominion Drive in McLean.

“The driver of a black Mercedes refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over for driving recklessly,” police said. “The driver intentionally rammed a police cruiser before turning down a dead-end street and running away.”

Police arrested 45-year-old Brian Templeman and charged him with his fourth driving while impaired (DWI) offense, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, assault on law enforcement and eluding, according to police.
