Hot on the heels of Amazon announcing its new office campus in Arlington, eyes are turning towards Apple’s rumored interest in a new location in Northern Virginia — specifically, Tysons.

The Washington Post reported in May that Apple was considering the Scotts Run development in Tysons. Now, Tysons Reporter hears that the iPhone maker is “seriously” eying a Fairfax County office campus, potentially bringing up to 20,000 jobs to the area.

So what is Scotts Run and what is planned there, exactly?

Scotts Run is a proposed 8 million-square-foot mixed-use development near the McLean Metro station. The development, broken into Scotts Run North and South, straddles Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123).

Scotts Run had been mentioned as a potential location for Amazon but passed over by Fairfax County and the Commonwealth of Virginia as an official applicant in favor of the 26-acre CIT site in Loudoun, also Tysons’ competitor for Apple.

Scotts Run South is part of a rapidly growing network of new developments at the eastern end of Tysons spurred by the development of the Capital One headquarters. Approved in 2013, plans call for seven apartments, nine office buildings, an Archer Hotel and retail space. The 425-unit apartment complex The Haden and the 14-story office building Mitre 4 have already been completed.

Two new residential towers were approved in May 2018. The towers will have a maximum of 475 units combined, of which 20 percent will be dedicated to affordable housing.

The proposed Scotts Run North development north of Dolley Madison Boulevard would convert a surface parking lot, which currently serves as parking for the Metro station, into a high-density mix of residential and office buildings.

Whether Apple chooses to go the Amazon route and help inspire a new name for the neighborhood remains to be seen.

A Great Falls man has been arrested and charged in yesterday’s robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank near the Old Brogue Irish Pub.

Police throughout Fairfax County were told to be on the lookout for the suspect after he demanded and received money from a teller and then demanded the keys to her SUV. Police officers, sheriff’s deputies, detectives, SWAT team members and two police helicopters helped in the search for the suspect, who was later arrested and identified as 60-year-old Christopher Lapp.

BANK ROBBERY: 750 Walker Road (Wells Fargo Bank), 11/13/18, 11:39a.m. A man entered the bank carrying a handgun and handed the teller a note and a bag, demanding money.  After the teller gave the suspect money, he walked out of the bank and followed another customer to her car and told her to give him the keys to her SUV.   She gave him the keys and the man then drove away towards the back of the shopping center.  Her abandoned car was recovered nearby a short time later.  Witnesses described the suspect as approximately, 5’07” and wearing a beige mask, black baseball cap, sunglasses, a beige jacket, and dark pants with two blue or purple stripes down the sides. Many entities responded to assist in the search to include our SWAT Team, robbery detectives, patrol officers, Fairfax County and U.S. Park Police helicopters, and Fairfax County Sheriff Deputies.  60-year-old Christopher Warren Lapp, of Great Falls, was found in the area matching the description and was ultimately charged with armed robbery, carjacking, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the robbery.  He was transported to the Adult Detention Center and held without bond.

A trio of young men from Falls Church were arrested in Tysons Sunday after allegedly leading police on a foot chase.

Fairfax County Police say the men stole items from the Macy’s department store at Tysons Corner Center mall by first stacking the merchandise by the door and then, after gathering enough stuff, running off with it. But security guards noticed the scheme in progress and called police, and officers arrived just as the men were trying to make their getaway with the stolen goods, according to FCPD.

After a foot pursuit, all three were arrested, police said. They’re being charged with grand larceny.

1961 Chain Bridge Rd (Macys), 11/11/18, 4:12 p.m. Officers were notified by Macy’s loss prevention of three men putting merchandise by the door to steal. Officers arrived at the store as the men were running out with the stolen merchandise. They were caught within minutes after a short foot pursuit. Derlin Carcamo Alvarez, 21, Jorge Melendez Gonzalez, 20, and Wilson Mondrago Ochoa, 23, all of Falls Church, were charged with Grand Larceny.

Local residents looking to catch a bus to New York City no longer have to take the trip to Union Station or Chinatown.

OurBus, a bus service founded in 2016 offering intercity and commuter routes, will run a new route from Tysons to New York City starting this Sunday (Nov. 18).

“We saw a terrific opportunity to provide local Tyson’s residents a more efficient, less stressful travel option to NYC,” said Axel Hellman, co-founder of OurBus, in a press release.  “Rather than traveling to a city center such as Arlington or D.C., and paying for parking, our customers can board our buses close to their home and work.”

Tickets for the maiden voyage from Tysons to New York are $25. The bus picks up on Dolley Madison Boulevard in front of the McLean Metro Station at 1 p.m. and will drop off at Park Avenue S. between 26th and 27th Streets in New York at 5:40 p.m.

Hellman said the bus tickets are more affordable than flying or other forms of travel, which is true, although it’s worth noting that tickets from Washington, D.C. earlier that morning are notably cheaper with a 7 a.m. trip for $15 and an 8:30 a.m. trip for $10.

The company also offers full refunds if the booking is canceled up to 25 hours prior to departure time and can exchange tickets for different departure times within 24 hours.

An early morning altercation ended in a homicide on the 2900 block of Charing Cross Road, just east of the Mosaic District, according to Fairfax County Police.

Oscar Daniel Diaz Fuentes, 27, was stabbed in the torso this morning (Wednesday) around 1 a.m. during a domestic dispute. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, Jose Adalberto Vasquez Hernandez, lived in the apartment with Fuentes. Hernandez was Fuentes’ mother’s boyfriend and, following an argument, Hernandez left and returned later to stab Fuentes, police said. Hernandez was arrested at the scene.

“It’s still early in the investigation, and detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau and Crime Scene Section continue to process the scene and interview the involved parties,” FCPD noted.

There may be even more upside for Fairfax County from Arlington and Alexandria’s Amazon HQ2 win.

With Amazon set to bring tens of thousands of jobs to the Crystal City area, Apple is now looking elsewhere for a large East Coast outpost.

The Washington Post reported in May that Apple was looking at sites in Crystal City, Loudoun County and the planned Scotts Run development in Tysons. The would-be Apple campus would house 20,000 employees, according to the Post.

But Arlington and Crystal City are now out of the running, according to Arlington Economic Development Director Victor Hoskins.

Though the Loudoun option remains, we’re told that Apple is looking “seriously” at Fairfax County.

Gerry Gordon, Fairfax’s top economic development official, declined to comment on the Apple news. Via a spokesman, Gordon told Tysons Reporter that it is his policy not to talk about company moves until it’s made official.

Last Wednesday an employee at Vienna Jewelry (131 W. Maple Ave.) noticed several women in the store “acting suspiciously” and called police, according to the monthly Vienna Police highlights.

The employee followed one of the women as she quickly exited a back room and fled out the side door with the other women to a waiting van. The vehicle took off northbound on Lawyers Road and then stopped a few blocks away from the store, with the women running off in different directions. Police found and identified some of the van’s occupants.

According to the report, the store employees are checking the store’s inventory but did not immediately notice anything missing.

Also in the crime report, food is showing up in some unwelcome places around Vienna.

A resident on the 500 block of Walker Street called the police to report that an unknown person dumped a large garbage bag full of dozens of loose donuts into the bed of his truck sometime after last Sunday (Nov. 4). Several donuts also wound up in front of the storm drain on the street. According to the tongue-in-cheek report on the incident, “the officer was upset to discover that the donuts were no longer edible… wild animals had gotten to those donuts before the officers could.”

Finally, two residents reported vandalism by eggs just days apart. On Oct. 29, a resident on the 900 block of Echols Street SE said someone threw eggs at one of her home’s windows. Then, on Halloween, a resident on the 400 block of Echols Street SE said someone threw eggs at both his vehicle parked in front of his residence and one of its second-level windows.

Update on 11/15/18: The man has died, according to police.

(Updated at 4:45 p.m.) A man is in critical condition after a pedestrian-involved crash in the Vienna area last night.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Old Courthouse Road and Westwood Drive at 5 p.m. Monday. Police initially reported driver who had been involved in a crash and had exited his vehicle.

Sometime after the first crash, police said the man was carrying items from his wife’s car across the street back to his when he walked in front of an oncoming car which struck him.

Fairfax County Police said the driver who struck the man remained on-scene. The victim remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police told Tysons Reporter.

Update on 11/14/18: A suspect has been arrested and charged in the bank robbery.

(Updated at 4:40 p.m.) Fairfax County Police are looking for a man who robbed a Wells Fargo Bank in Great Falls today.

The robbery was reported around noon at the Wells Fargo at 750 Walker Road, near the Old Brogue Irish Pub.

The suspect reportedly made off with cash and is now on the run after fleeing in a car. He was described by police as “5’6″-5’8″, possibly wearing glasses, black baseball hat, beige jacket, and possibly armed.”
