The “Tysons After Dark” series highlights different activities that keep people busy once the sun goes down.
Indie films are back at the Angelika Film Center in Mosaic District.
After temporarily closing due to COVID-19 restrictions, Angelika Film Center reopened today (Friday).
The movie line-up for tonight and this weekend includes “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” “Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula,” “Inception” (for its 10th anniversary) and “The Eight Hundred.”
To reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, the theater has several rules in place for moviegoers, including mask requirements, floor decals for social distancing, hand sanitizer stations, upgraded filters in the HVAC systems and more. A full list of the theater’s safety measures is online.
While movie theaters were allowed to reopen with limited capacity starting July 1, most theaters in the Tysons area waited several weeks before screening movies again. ShowPlace Icon and AMC Theatre reopened in Tysons last week.
In a poll earlier this week, roughly 68% of 369 Tysons Reporter readers said they do not feel comfortable going back to movie theaters as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Approximately 16% said they do feel safe heading back to theaters, while 14% haven’t decided yet.
After delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, several new films are hitting the screens at newly-reopened movie theaters.
“Tenet,” “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Bill & Ted Face The Music” are some of the films poised to hit theaters soon.
In the Tysons area, ShowPlace Icon in The Boro and AMC Theatre in Tysons Corner Center recently reopened. Angelika Film Center’s website says the Mosaic District location is “coming soon.”
Gov. Ralph Northam forced movie theaters to close in the spring, but under Phase Three, which started July 1, movie theaters can open at 50% capacity.

ShowPlace Icon is now screening movies again at The Boro.
The 72,000-square-foot theater (1667 Silver Hill Drive) — the seventh for the luxury movie theater chain — temporarily closed its new Tysons location due to COVID-19 restrictions just weeks after opening. During its closure, the theater sponsored The Boro’s drive-in movie series in June and July.
The theater announced that it reopened today (Friday). Competitor AMC Theatre reopened yesterday in Tysons Corner Center.
Today and this weekend, ShowPlace Icon is screening “Inception” to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, “Unhinged,” “Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula” and “Words on Bathroom Walls,” according to its website.
Audience goers are required to wear face coverings. The theater is encouraging people to buy tickets and concession items in advance to reduce contact. A full list of safety measures to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 is on the theater’s website.
The theater’s 14 auditoriums can seat 1,795 people, but the movie chain said that it will have reduced seating due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Falls Church’s Sunset Cinema is coming back for its 17th year with new safety measures due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The annual event screens movies at Cherry Hill Park. This year, the movies will start at 7:45 on Fridays.
The event will be held in a socially distant format with spots marked across the lawn. Up to 20 households are permitted, and people must bring their own seats, blankets, snacks and masks, the city recently announced.
The movie lineup is:
- Sept. 18: “Moana”
- Sept. 25: “Onward”
- Oct. 2: “Remember the Titans”
People must pre-register for the free movies. Registration for city residents starts on Monday, Aug. 24, and on Monday, Aug. 31, for non-city residents. Households can only register for one Sunset Cinema event.
Space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, according to the city. In the case of inclement weather, registrants will be notified of a movie make-up date.

The Tysons Corner Center theater is among the more than 100 locations AMC Theatres plans to reopen next week with one-day-only 15-cent tickets.
The movie theater chain announced the plans today, saying that the steeply-discounted ticket prices will celebrate AMC’s 100th anniversary by giving audience-goers ticket prices from the 1920s.
The more than 100 locations will offer the 15-cent tickets for their reopening on Thursday (Aug. 20).
“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to American moviegoers who are looking for an opportunity to get out of their houses and apartments and escape into the magic of the movies,” Adam Aron, the president and CEO of AMC Theatres, said in the announcement.
Roughly 300 other AMC locations are slated to reopen within the following two weeks — in time for Disney’s “The New Mutants,” which is expected to get released on Aug. 28, and Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” on Sept. 3, the announcement said.
The remaining one-third of the theaters will reopen “only after authorized to do so by state and local officials,” the announcement said.

Moviegoers will have to wait a little bit longer than expected for the AMC cinema at Tysons Corner Center to reopen.
AMC Theatres announced yesterday (Thursday) that it plans to reopen its U.S. movie theaters in mid to late August after previously saying they would start screenings by the end of July.
“This new timing reflects currently expected release dates for much anticipated blockbusters like Warner Bros.’ ‘Tenet’ and Disney’s ‘Mulan,’ as well as release dates for several other new movies coming to AMC’s big screens,” according to yesterday’s announcement.
Earlier this month, AMC Theatres said that it is working to reduce its total debt by at least $460 million.
AMC noted that roughly one-third of its movie theaters in Europe and the Middle East reopened under normal operations.

More drive-in movies are coming to the Tysons area. Wolf Trap now lists several drive-ins in August on its website.
“Bring out the popcorn! We’re transforming the parking lot at Wolf Trap National Park into a drive-in movie theater and bringing family-friendly summer fun to the community,” according to Wolf Trap’s website.
Here’s the line-up listed on the website:
- Thursday, Aug. 6: “Mamma Mia!“
- Friday, Aug. 7: “Sing“
- Saturday, Aug. 8: “Dreamgirls“
- Sunday, Aug. 9: “Dirty Dancing“
Tickets went on sale today at 10 a.m. The price per car is $40.
People can also buy the “Movie Pack for Two,” which includes two boxes of popcorn, a pack of M&Ms and two bottles of water for $20, or the “Wolfie Kids Pack,” which includes a plush animal, two chocolate chip cookies, themed coloring pages and crayons for $15.
The gates will open at 7 p.m. ahead of the 8:30 p.m. screening for each event.
According to the event guidelines, no walk-ins or bikes will be allowed, and movie-goers must stay in their vehicles unless using the restrooms. People can bring their food if they want, but pets are not allowed.
“Sound for all movies will be broadcast to your car’s FM radio, please be aware of how to use the Accessory mode in your vehicle or bring a portable radio,” according to the guidelines.

While the movies are free, Tysons Corner Center is asking people to donate $25 to Second Story, a local nonprofit that helps people seeking food, shelter and emergency support. People can donate by texting “2SGIVE” to 50155 or on Second Story’s website.
The series, which is sponsored by the Hyatt Regency Tysons Corner Center, will run from July-September, according to the mall’s website.
Moviegoers can expect a different film on the second weekend of each month:
- Friday, July 10: “The Sandlot”
- Friday, August 14: “Aladdin”
- Saturday, Sept. 12: “Mrs. Doubtfire”
People must reserve spots because of limited space along Fashion Blvd between Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s, according to the mall’s website.
The drive-in will open at 6 p.m. ahead of the screening at 8:30 p.m. The mall’s website is encouraging moviegoers to shop and eat at the mall, listen to live music and stay at the Hyatt Regency.
With restrictions on movie theaters due to the pandemic, several drive-in movies have popped up around Tysons this summer, including at the McLean Metro lot, The Boro and the Mosaic District.

Movie-goers have three different drive-in movie options this summer in the Tysons area.
The various screenings recommend that people get their tickets sooner rather than later due to limited capacity. Here’s where people can find the drive-in movies and which dates still have tickets available.
Mosaic District
Tonight, drive-in movies kick off at the Mosaic District with “Captain Marvel.”
People must stay in their vehicles on the seventh floor of the Market parking lot to watch the movies, which will have captions and audio via an FM transmitter on the radio. Movie-theater inspired fare from Alta Strada will be available to order.
While tickets have sold out for tonight’s show and the double feature — “Toy Story 4” and “Jurassic Park” — on Friday, July 24, tickets have not gone on sale for the yet-to-be-announced films on Friday, Aug. 28.
The Boro
Last week, The Boro started off its four-week-long screenings with “Dreamgirls.” The drive-in at The Boro has a pedestrian-only section along with spaces for cars and offers extended restaurant outdoor seating and live entertainment.
“The entire series is sold out, but we are opening a limited number of spots to each upcoming movie at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning!” a post on The Boro’s Facebook page said on Tuesday. Tysons Reporter previously wrote about the full line-up of family-friendly films.
Capital One Center
Capital One Center will soon have drive-in movies from July 11 to Aug. 2 to fundraise for Second Story, a local nonprofit that helps people seeking food, shelter and emergency support.
While the movies at the McLean Metro lot (1820 Dolley Madison Blvd) are free, Capital One is asking people to make a $25 donation when they register.
“How to Train Your Dragon,” which is the series’ first movie on Saturday, July 11, still has available slots. The movies for July 12 ad July 18-19 are sold out.
Registration will open on July 13 for:
- Saturday, July 25: “Shrek”
- Sunday, July 26: “A League of Their Own”
- Saturday, Aug. 1: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”
- Sunday, Aug. 2: “Footloose”
Food will be available from Curbside Kitchen. Movie-goers must stay in their vehicles.
