Tysons Reporter is starting a new monthly crime map showing where the incidents occurred in Fairfax County Police Department’s McLean District Station.
Readers overwhelmingly voted in support of the map when we polled them last week.
We went ahead and pulled together all of the incidents noted for the McLean District Station in FCPD crime recaps from July 1-31, weeded out the ones that are not in the Tysons Reporter coverage area and plotted them in the interactive map above.
The McLean District Station covers crime in Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church, McLean, Tysons and Great Falls.
Use the icon in the top left corner of the map to toggle between the various types of crimes displayed.
Fairfax County’s weekday police recaps are not comprehensive lists of every incident and the addresses are approximate. FCPD also notes that information in the recaps “is generally based on initial reports made to the police department.”
Anyone with information about any of these crimes should call 703-691-2131 or 1-866-411-TIPS(8477).
Tysons Reporter covers a lot of crime — from the police departments in the Town of Vienna and the City of Falls Church to the Fairfax County police.
Within the county’s police department, the McLean District Station handles crime in Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church, McLean, Tysons and Great Falls.
In the past, our sister site Reston Now used to do monthly maps showing where different types of crime within the Reston District Station took place, along with a quick breakdown on the number of different incidents. Here’s an example from July 2017:
So, Tysons Reporter readers — would you like to see a similar map every month on this site showing where McLean District Station incidents in the Fairfax County police reports happened?

Fairfax County police arrested a man in connection with fraud at the Louis Vuitton store in Tysons Galleria last month.
On June 2, Julian Kendrick allegedly picked up an online order totaling $9,910 that was linked to a driver’s license from Georgia with a different name, according to a court document.
“The store employees thought that the transaction was suspicious and requested police assistance, however, the employees did allow Kendrick to complete the transaction and receive the merchandise,” police said in the document.
Police said they found Kendrick in his car and he gave them a driver’s license from Michigan with his name to police, who then searched the car and found fraudulent identification, including two credit cards and the driver’s license from Georgia.
Police arrested Kendrick, charging him with false pretenses and for the fraudulent credit card.
The Tysons branch of Huntington Learning Center (HLC) — in the spotlight after the arrest and death of the franchise owner — has permanently closed.
The trouble for the school started in April when Jeffrey Cummins, the owner of the HLC franchise in Tysons, was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting two of his former students. The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said the abuse took place in Cummins’ Annandale home, not at the school.
But after the arrest, more assault charges were added. Cummins was out on a bond but didn’t turn himself into the Fairfax County jail as ordered. Last Wednesday, June 19, Cummins was found dead near Warsaw, Virginia.
The Tysons HLC at 8290 Old Courthouse Road briefly closed after the arrest was announced, though it reopened a few weeks later in early May.
Now, the facility has been permanently closed. A representative for HLC said students at the program have been offered the opportunity to transfer to other locations.
The media contact for HLC said parents interested in continuing instruction can call Huntington Learning Center in Fairfax at 571-310-0180 and all parents have “received communication” about obtaining a refund from the franchise.

Vienna police have recently been called for reports of people banging on a resident’s door in the 400 block of Onondio Circle SW.
A resident reported Friday, May 31, that a stranger banged on his front door and window around 12:30 a.m. before fleeing.
“This incident has occurred multiple times in the past few weeks,” the police report said.
The resident also reported to the police Friday, May 24, that he thought that one of the people in a car that drove past his house before 9 p.m. resembled the person from the night before (May 23) who banged loudly on the front door of the home, possibly trying to gain entry around midnight.
Police said the resident opened the door, and the person ran off.
“The resident believed there may have also been two other individuals in the yard,” according to the police report. “All three fled from the area in an unknown vehicle.”
The resident told police that two other similar incidents happened during the late night and early morning hours in the past two weeks.

The Vienna Police Department is offering tips for how to prevent stolen cars and vehicle tampering after a recent spate of car-related crimes.
“With the advent of warmer weather, the Town of Vienna Police Department would like to remind all Town of Vienna residents to secure their vehicles and personal belongings,” the reminder says. “Recently there have been several vehicle tamperings to include stolen vehicles from Vienna and the neighboring jurisdictions.”
The last week in May saw a dramatic increase for the month with a total of 21 car-related crimes, according to the weekly police highlights.

From May 24-30, police reported 13 vehicle tamperings, two stolen autos, three grand larcenies related to car thefts and three petit larcenies related to car thefts — not to mention, one Segway scooter reported as abandoned in front of one Vienna resident’s home.
Earlier in the month, the weekly crime reports ranged from three to seven car-related crimes.
While the police highlights are not a comprehensive list of every incident, they provide “a more substantive summary of several incidents, which may be of interest to the community,” according to the Town of Vienna.
The Vienna Police Department gave the following tips:
- lock car doors
- secure car windows
- remove any valuable items
- remove keys
- report suspicious activity
“In some cases, the subjects have been observed wearing several layers of clothing, not consistent with the weather conditions,” according to police. “This is used to conceal stolen items and also to make identification difficult as they will shed layers of clothing as they flee the area when they suspect they have been observed committing a crime.”
In ToV police incident reports from 5/24-30, there were reports of items stolen from 12 vehicles, 11 vehicles rummaged thru, and 2 cars stolen. What did they all have in common? The vehicles were unlocked! Vienna PD reminds residents to lock car doors & remove valuables. pic.twitter.com/bhfKPZeism
