An international ramen restaurant plans to start serving diners this week in The Boro.

Originally, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka wanted to open at 1636 Boro Place in April, but the pandemic delayed the eatery’s debut. The soft opening is set for tomorrow (Wednesday).

Now, Santouka will open limited indoor and outdoor seating, along with pickup and delivery services, according to a press release. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.

Diners can find a dozen types of ramen, including shio, miso, pork and vegetarian, on the menu.

Started in Japan in 1983, the Hokkaido-style ramen chain has more than 60 restaurants in 10 countries, including 16 locations in the U.S., according to the press release.

Food’s Style USA, which is running the Tysons restaurant, said in a statement that the tables will be disinfected frequently and that the employees will have regular health screenings and sanitation training.

Santouka is the latest newcomer to the Tysons development near the Greensboro Metro station. FRESHFARM Farmers Markets opened at The Boro in July. Earlier this summer, Colour Bar StudioPoki DC and Tysons Nail Lounge also opened in the development looking to become a new destination in Tysons.

Before the pandemic hit Northern Virginia, an international ramen restaurant was aiming to open in March in The Boro.

In March, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka pushed its expected opening to April. Now, the restaurant is looking to open in August with limited indoor and outdoor seating, according to a press release. The restaurant will also offer pickup and delivery services.

Jennie Kuperstein, a spokesperson for the restaurant, said that the pandemic delayed the opening at 1636 Boro Place.

The Hokkaido-style ramen chain started in Japan in 1983 and now has more than 60 restaurants in 10 countries, including 16 locations in the U.S., according to the press release.

Food’s Style USA, which has launched four Santouka’s restaurants in the Boston and Seattle areas, will open the Tysons restaurant, according to the press release.

Food’s Style USA’s CEO Jun Yoneda said in a statement that tables will be frequently disinfected, employees will undergo regular health screenings and sanitation training and the restaurant will follow state and CDC guidelines.

The restaurant’s menu includes tonkotsu soup, shio ramen, Japanese karaage-style fried chicken, fried rice and gyoza, the press release said.

“To make our signature tonkotsu broth, we simmer pork bones for about 20 hours over the low heat until it becomes pearly white and then add the vegetables, dried fish, kelp and other savory ingredients to it,” according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Once open, the Tysons restaurant’s hours will be 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.

People can get antibodies tests for COVID-19 at an upcoming blood drive in Tysons.

The Boro is hosting the American Cross blood drive, and donors will be able to get the antibody tests, which can indicate if donors have previously been infected by the virus.

More from the press release:

This will be an essential part of the life-saving network connecting donors to those in need of blood, platelets and plasma. There is an urgent need for blood donations right now to meet the needs of patients in hospitals as surgical procedures and treatments that were temporarily paused due to the pandemic resume again.

The American Red Cross is also currently testing all blood, platelet, and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies for a limited time and donors will receive the free results of their antibody test within 7-10 days through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by logging in to the donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

The blood drive is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at Boro Station (1775 Greensboro Station Place). Donors, who must make appointments online, can expect social distancing in the conference center.

“Appointments allow the American Red Cross to exercise hygienic practices and provide donor services,” the press release said.

The Meridian Group is hoping to turn the former headquarters of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) into an extension of The Boro.

The plans would redo the old NADA site and an adjacent property — both currently vacant — into a mixed-use development with residential uses, a continuing care facility and ground-floor retail space, Elizabeth Baker, a senior land use planner for Walsh Colucci, told Tysons Reporter.

“The vision is to extend The Boro development across Westpark Drive and to continue the transformation of Tysons from a suburban office park to an urban center,” she said.

This new project proposes four buildings — two residential ones, one for the continuing care facility and the last one, which would either be a health club or townhomes, Baker said.

“The proposal is 1.1 million square feet overall,” Baker said, adding that it is less dense than other nearby developments because it’s further away from the Greensboro Metro station.

The project also includes a centralized park that would be open to the public — “I think that is one of the high focal points of the development,” she said.

The Meridian Group acquired the NADA headquarters building and an adjacent site, paying $33.7 million to the NADA for 8400 Westpark Drive in late 2018, the Washington Business Journal reported. The NADA relocated to 8484 Westpark Drive in October 2018, according to WBJ.

Fairfax County accepted the rezoning plans for the project earlier this week. Hearing dates for the county’s Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors have not been announced yet.

“I think this particular application really helps to expand the connected grid of streets, create walkable blocks, provide new residential opportunities as well as a continuing care facility to help meet the needs of the senior population,” she said. “It’s all designed around energizing the streets and parks.”
