Work for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project’s Silver Line Phase 1 has been underway in Tysons.
Phase 1 for the Silver Line includes the four stations (McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro and Spring Hill) in Tysons along with the Wiehle-Reston East station.
Here is a roundup of recent work in Tysons for the project and what drivers and pedestrians can expect this week.
Near McLean Metro Station
People can expect a lane shift in mid-August for the realignment of Old Meadow Road with Capital One Tower Drive at Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123), according to the website.
“The Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfax County requested the realignment to facilitate traffic crossing Route 123 from the Capital One complex to Old Meadow Road,” the website said. “The change is needed because of impacts caused by Silver Line construction at McLean Metrorail station.”
When the new work starts in August, crews will create a new median on Old Meadow Road at the intersection, necessitating the lane shift. The work at the intersection faced delays due to COVID, the website said.
“Crews continue to install drainage infrastructure, signal equipment, and landscaping along the south side of Old Meadow Road and the east side of Dolley Madison Boulevard to complete that part of the work,” the website said.
Leesburg Pike
Crews plan to wrap up Phase 1 work along Leesburg Pike in Tysons.
By the end of this week, final clean up is expected to be done on asphalt repairs and striping, according to the project’s website.
Recently, contractors finished “upgrades for the latest ADA compliance, repaired cracked sidewalks and repaired curb and gutter along the Phase 1 alignment,” the website said.
Lane Closures in Tysons
People will also see several lane closures this week in Tysons from today (Monday) to Thursday (July 23) from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and on Friday (July 24) from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
The closures include:
- left turn lane from 300 feet before Westwood Center Drive to Leesburg Pike.
- right lane from Route 267 to Westwood Center Drive
- left lane from 300 feet before Westpark Road to 400 feet after Westpark Road
- right lane from 600 feet before Spring Hill Road to 300 feet after Spring Hill Road
- right lane from 300 feet before Tyco Road to 300 feet before Dulles Toll Road exit ramp
The closures are for manhole and sidewalk repairs and underdrain installation.

Work has recently started to realign Old Meadow Road at Dolley Madison Blvd (Route 123) in Tysons.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s Silver Line project is doing the work to realign the road with the main entrance to the Capital One complex, according to the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project.
The work started on Sunday (March 29) and will continue until Friday (April 3).

Nighttime closures are planned this weekend to permit the installation of Jersey barriers. The right turn lane of northbound Route 123 will be closed at Old Meadow Road as well as the right eastbound lane of Old Meadow Road to facilitate construction. At least one lane of Old Meadow Road will remain open at all times in each direction.
The first phase of the project will take approximately eight weeks to complete and includes demolition of existing sidewalk and curb and gutter. Follow-on work includes installation of new storm drainage; installation of a new traffic lane, new sidewalk and new curb and gutter; and installation of new signaling equipment. Please drive carefully and safely in the area and remain aware of pedestrians and construction workers.
People can expect the left turn lane to Old Meadow Road from southbound Route 123 and the right turn lane to Old Meadow Road from northbound Route 123 to be closed from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday.
Meanwhile, the right lane of eastbound Old Meadow Road will be closed from Route 123 to Colshire Meadow Road during the same days and times.

Updated at 1:15 p.m. — Shortly after 1 p.m., the lanes reopened, MATOC tweeted. Drivers can expect delays up to 2.5 miles.Â
Earlier: Drivers can expect delays from a tractor-trailer crash on I-495, which has caused the closure of several northbound lanes.
The crash is located along the highway north of Leesburg Pike (Route 7), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The crash happened shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to a tweet from the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Program.
The left, left-center and right-center lanes on northbound I-495 are currently closed, according to VDOT.
As of 1:10 p.m., traffic is backed up from I-66 to the Dulles Access Road along northbound I-495, according to Google Maps.

Westbound Georgetown Pike by the Scott’s Run Nature Preserve is closed after a brush fire broke out.
All of the westbound lanes are closed on Georgetown Pike near Swinks Mill Road, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Fairfax County sent out an alert about the lane closures at 3:15 p.m.
Traffic has already backed up severely along Georgetown Pike as of 3:30 p.m., according to Google Maps.

Two eastbound lanes of Route 7 are closed due to a multi-vehicle crash near Wolf Trap.
The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m., according to a Fairfax County alert.
The crash is near Wolftrap Run Road and Google Maps shows heavy traffic congestion as of 10:15 a.m.
The eastbound right center lane, right lane and right shoulder are closed, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Southbound lanes of GW Parkway are closed near the intersection with Route 123 in McLean.
The closures are due to a vehicle crash, according to an alert from Fairfax County.
All of the southbound lanes are closed as of 3:24 p.m., according to Virginia 511.
Drivers can expect delays. Traffic is backed up about 1.5 miles, the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Program tweeted.

Drivers can expect delays from a crash this morning at the intersection fo Tysons Blvd and Galleria Drive.
A tow truck is on its way and drivers can expect a brief right lane closure, Sgt. James Curry, a police spokesman, told Tysons Reporter.
Traffic was heavy on Tysons Blvd around 9:55 a.m., according to Google Maps.
Curry said that no injuries have been reported.

A gas leak has closed the eastbound lanes of Leesburg Pike by The Boro in Tysons.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews are on the scene of a gas leak in the 8400 block of Leesburg Pike that was caused by construction crews hitting a gas line, the fire department tweeted.
“Units shutting down eastbound Leesburg Pike (Rte. 7) and Gosnell Road,” the tweet said.
The eastbound lanes of Leesburg Pike have been shut down, according to Fairfax Alerts.

Drivers can expect lane closures as work begins tonight (Tuesday) on areas of the GW Parkway in McLean.
The National Park Service (NPS) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) wants to repair sections of the GW Parkway in McLean and Clara Barton Parkway in D.C.
On the GW Parkway, the work will take place between Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) and I-495. Drivers can expect single-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“We’re working this fall so the parkways are ready for winter driving,” Superintendent Charles Cuvelier said in the press release. “Even though this work won’t address the entirety of either road, it’s part of the National Park Service’s long-term plan to maintain and eventually reconstruct both.”
The project plans to level uneven parts of the road, add new pavement markings and replace old asphalt.
“The work will last into late fall with completion depending on the weather in the weeks ahead,” the press release said.
Construction crews are also working to fix the cause of a sizeable sinkhole that opened up on the GW Parkway back in March.
“The FHWA recently finished 50 vertical feet of excavation to remove a 60-year-old brick drainage structure that had failed,” the press release said. “Workers are now completing the installation of a new drain and back-filling the excavated area.”
NPS is also competing for federal grants to fully fund a project that would reconstruct GW Parkway near Route 123.
