Tuesday (April 9)

• Free Cone Day — 12-8 p.m. at Ben & Jerry’s (136 Maple Avenue W) — The Vienna Ben & Jerry’s is hosting a Free Cone Day in partnership with local nonprofit The Committee for Helping Others. Anyone who comes in for free ice cream can donate to the group.
• Solarize Community Forum — 7:30 p.m. at Vienna Town Hall (127 Center Street S) — Local residents and business owners are invited out to a discussion with Solarize NoVa on the economics behind going solar.

Wednesday (April 10)

• Open House Tasting — 5-6 p.m. at Bards Alley (110 Church Street NW) — The Bard’s Alley bookstore in Vienna is hosting an open house testing with local vendors offering a selection of soups, hummus, desserts and more. Drink specials will also be on offer. The event is free to attend with no reservation required.

Thursday (April 11)

• Columbine 20 Years Later — 7:30-9 p.m. at Westbriar Elementary (1741 Pine Valley Drive) — Moms Demand Action’s Virginia chapter is hosting a retrospective on the Columbine shooting. Two women who lived through the experience, a teenager at the school and a local psychologist, are scheduled to discuss their experiences and take a look at what’s changed since then.

Friday (April 12)

• Film Distribution and Finance Seminar — 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Angelika Film Center (2911 District Ave) — The NOVA Fest and Capital Film Market are hosting a seminar for people interested in getting involved in the movie-making business. Agents will be on hand to talk about how people with films or scripts they’re looking to sell can connect with the right producers.  Tickets are $26.
• Family Flashlight Egg Hunt — 7:30 p.m. at Glyndon Park (300 Glyndon Street NE) — Bring a flashlight and a basket for Vienna’s evening egg hunt. The hunt starts at dark, with a visit by the Easter Bunny at 8 p.m. Tickets are $3 per child with a limit of six per family.

Saturday (April 13)

• Record Store Day — 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. at Records and Rarities in Tysons Corner Center — Records and Rarities is hosting “Record Store Day”, a celebration with 10 percent off all used vinyl, free coffee and cinnamon buns, and several prizes and giveaways. The line is planned to start at 7:30 a.m. outside the store.
• Masters’ Putt-Pong Tournament — 12-2 p.m. at Brandbox in Tysons Corner Center — Chubbie’s is hosting a two-on-two putt-pong tournament. The game is a riff on party classic beer-pong, but with golf accouterment. All participants will receive a free cooler bag and $5 off any casual stretch shorts. The tournament is the first of a series of events at the mall’s BrandBox events.
• The Last Bison and Broke Royals — 8 p.m. at Jammin Java (227 Maple Ave E) — Indie folk band The Last Bison is scheduled to perform at Jammin’ Java. Tickets are $15 for general admission or $25 for premier tickets.

Sunday (April 14)

• Sesame Street Sing-a-Long — 11:15 a.m.-12 p.m. at Nordstrom Tysons Corner Center (8075 Tysons Corner Center) — Sesame Street Live — a show coming to the Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax on May 4 — is hosting a free show at the Tysons Corner Center Nordstrom. Attendees can also save $5 on the main show in May.
• Paint for Pups and Kitties — 12-2:15 p.m. at Muse Paintbar (2920 District Avenue) — A paint and sip event at the Muse Paintbar in the Mosaic District will raise money for City Dogs Rescue and City Cats. Tickets are $45.

Cake chain Nothing Bundt Cakes is hosting a very brief celebration of its 300th store opening.

From 3-3:05 p.m., stores nationwide are planning to give away up to 300 confetti “bundtlets” — little bundt cakes — for 300 seconds. The cakes are limited to one per person.

The Vienna location for Nothing Bundt Cakes opened in November at 129 Maple Avenue W.

Bundt cakes are made in a pan that gives them a distinctive ring shape. In addition to ten cake flavors and forty unique designs, Nothing Bundt Cakes also offers various cake-themed gifts and decor.

This isn’t the first free cake giveaway at the bakery. The first 50 guests at the store’s grand opening January got free bundtlets for one year.

Fairfax County is planning an LED lightbulb giveaway to brighten local homes and help residents save on their monthly electric bill.

Throughout the spring, libraries across the county will host LED giveaways. All households can get a free LED bulb during the giveaway and are eligible for up to four more, in exchange for turning in incandescent or compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

The Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library (7584 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church) will host a giveaway on Thursday, May 2 from noon-2 p.m.

According to a press release, residents could save up to $75 a year in their electric bill by replacing the five most frequently used incandescent bulbs with LEDs.

“We wanted to help residents use LEDs in their homes, so we will be offering information and one free LED for anyone passing,” said Jessica Lavender, program manager for Energy Action Fairfax, said in a video. “We’ll have a couple tables right when you walk in and displays showing different lighting available.”

In last year’s giveaway, 8,000 LEDs were distributed to roughly 1,6000 people, resulting in nearly 200,000 kWh and $22,000 saved.

The giveaway is part of the LED exchange program, a partnership between Fairfax County, Energy Action Fairfax, and the Fairfax County Public Library. Here is the full list of giveaway location, via Fairfax County.

Get those smoke alarms checked, because if you’re a Vienna resident that could get you a free pizza on Thursday.

Domino’s Pizza is partnering with the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department for Fire Night. On Feb. 7, anyone ordering at the Vienna Domino’s from 5-8 p.m. may have their pizza delivered in a fire engine.

According to the event description, once the delivery arrives, the firefighters will come inside and inspect the smoke detectors throughout the house. If all the smoke detectors are working, the order is free.

If any of the smoke detectors are not working, the firefighters will replace them for free, but the person who called in will be charged for the pizza.

Participation in the event is not required and is only eligible for deliveries.

Card payments are taken in advance and canceled if the order is free. Cash payment will be required if card information is not provided while placing your order if smoke detectors are not working.

Police Looking for Missing Local Man — Fairfax County Police are asking for the public’s help finding a missing, endangered 21-year-old man who was last seen January 31 on the 3100 block of Monticello Drive in Falls Church. [Twitter]

West Falls Church Development Modified — The Falls Church City Council is set to vote on a series of five modifications to a plan for the private development of a 10.3 acre city-owned property near the West Falls Church Metro station. Among the changes are “an increase in residential density allowing an additional 50,000 square feet in senior housing and an additional 100,000 square feet in residential density of either condominiums or studio and one bedroom apartments.” [Falls Church News-Press]

Pair Arrested for Mall Theft, Assault on Officer — Two women from Laurel, Maryland were arrested last week and charged with stealing items from the Superdry store at Tysons Corner Center. One of the women is charged with assault on law enforcement after allegedly trying to fight the arresting officers. [FCPD]

Gannett Rejects Takeover Offer — Tysons-based newspaper chain Gannett has rejected an unsolicited takeover proposal, made by a hedge fund-owned company best known for slashing costs and jobs. [USA Today, BusinessWire]

Free Soup at Barnes and Noble — The Tysons Corner Center Barnes and Noble store is offering free soup with the purchase of a sandwich this month. [Instagram]

If you’re a government employee with a pet at home, you don’t need to worry about affording food for your animal.

Kriser’s Natural Pet, a pet store chain featuring natural food, treats and supplies, is offering free food to furloughed government employees.

“As part of this community, we just couldn’t sit idly by and watch our friends suffer and stretch to make ends meet,” the store said in a press release. “If you have a pet and have been affected by the shutdown, come in. Show us your government employee ID and we’ll give you a comparable bag of food that your pet is eating for free.”

The store has a location in Vienna at 144 Maple Ave W. and in Tysons at 7505 Leesburg Pike inside the Whole Foods shopping center. There are also two locations in Arlington, one at the Lee-Harrison Shopping Center (2501 N. Harrison Street) and another in the Courthouse-Clarendon area (2509 N. Franklin Road).

Kriser’s has a variety of food types available for cats and dogs. While you’re there, if you’re looking for something to keep the pet busy over a snowed-in weekend, the stores also have a variety of toys and treats for cats and dogs.
