City of Falls Church police arrested a man for allegedly setting a marked sheriff’s vehicle on fire outside City Hall.
Falls Church police and the Arlington County Fire Department responded to a call for a vehicle fire around 6 a.m. yesterday (Monday).
“The fire was extinguished without injuries or damage to city buildings,” according to a Falls Church press release. The cruiser was totaled in the blaze, police said.
Police charged a 23-year-old man for arson near the scene of the fire. Police said “any additional charges are pending.”
The incident prompted an investigation by the Fire Marshall.
At a City Council meeting last night, City Manager Wyatt Shields said that “it was very startling… for employees who were coming to work this morning, they came by this burnt vehicle.”
While the police investigation is ongoing, Shields said, “We do not think there was any real rationale behind this arson. I think it was a random event.”
Shields said that the loss of the vehicle is covered by insurance.
Firefighters have extinguished a dump truck fire that broke out this afternoon by the Nouvelle Apartments in Tysons.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said they were on scene at Westpark and Jones Branch drives around 12:25 p.m., according to a tweet. The truck was by the construction site for the Monarch, a 20-story condominium tower northeast of Tysons Galleria.
One reader sent a video to Tysons Reporter showing the front part of the truck in flames and firefighters hosing the truck down.
The fire department tweeted that people can “expect delays in the area.”

A fire that broke out in a Vienna home caused roughly $125,000 worth of damage and displaced four residents, the fire department said.
Fire investigators have determined a malfunctioning space heater ignited combustible items, causing the accidental home fire in the 400 block of Old Courthouse Road, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
“A Vienna police officer was patrolling the area and noticed smoke pushing out of a basement window and notified Vienna [Police Department] dispatch,” the fire department said.
Firefighters responded around 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, and “quickly extinguished” the fire in the basement in a two-story, single-family home.
No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported. Four residents were offered Red Cross assistance, which they declined.

A fire that broke out in the garage of a McLean home caused roughly $60,000 worth of damage.
The fire broke out around 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at a two-story, single-family home in the 6700 block of Osborn Street, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and the Arlington County Fire Department arrived on the scene with smoke showing from the garage.

Crews quickly located and extinguished a fire in the garage. There were no reported firefighter or civilian injuries.
The fire was discovered when a passerby noticed smoke coming from the garage and called 9-1-1. There were no occupants home at the time of the fire. Smoke alarms did not activate due to the location of the fire.
Fire Investigators determined that the fire started in the garage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Red Cross services were offered but not accepted. Damages are approximately $60,000. The damage total includes a vehicle lift system and a classic car that was parked in the garage.

A building fire in Falls Church ended up sending one firefighter to the hospital yesterday (Tuesday).
The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 2) in the 7400 block of Lee Highway, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue tweet.
The accidental fire that started in the attic area by the chimney stack was discovered after the fire sprinkler system and fire alarm went off, the tweet said.
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The fire caused $2,500 worth of damages, according to the fire department.
