A music teacher who was facing charges of sexually abusing former students was found dead Wednesday (June 19).

Back in April, Fairfax County police arrested Jeffrey Cummins, the owner of the Huntington Learning Centers franchises in Tysons and Springfield, on charges of sexually abusing two former students.

After detectives found multiple victims, Cummins made arrangements to surrender himself to police on Tuesday (June 18), but he never arrived, according to the police department.

The next day, Cummins was found dead near Warsaw, Virginia. At the time of his death, he was facing eight felony counts and one count of aggravated sexual battery.

Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau began their investigation in May 2018 when a juvenile disclosed being inappropriately touched by Jeffrey Cummins over a period of several years. In January, another victim came forward and also disclosed being abused for several years by Cummins.

Detectives discovered four additional victims who came forward and disclosed they had also been sexually abused by Cummins between 1987 to 2017. On Tuesday, June 18, nine additional felony warrants were obtained for Cummins.  The charges included eight counts of indecent liberties by a custodian and one count of aggravated sexual battery…

Cummins was a private music teacher and gave lessons in his home in Annandale. He was also the founder and artistic director of Virginia Music Adventures, a traveling music group for school-age children. The investigation showed that the sexual abuse occurred both during music lessons and at other times when the juveniles were at his home. Cummins was also the owner of two Huntington Learning Centers, one located in Tysons and one in Springfield.  He taught at Langley School in McLean, Green Hedges School in Vienna and Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, Maryland.

The Virginia State Police are investigating his death and “at this stage of the investigation, no foul play is suspected,” according to FCPD.

The Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond will complete an examination and autopsy.

Fairfax County police are investigating a man’s drowning in a pool in McLean on Saturday (June 15).

Police responded to a report of a drowning and found 31-year-old Justin Hollman, of Chesapeake, in a residential pool around 3 p.m. in the 1100 block of Pine Hill Road, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“It is unknown how long he had been in the pool and the circumstances surrounding his drowning are still under investigation,” according to the press release.

Police pulled Hollman from the pool, and rescue staff pronounced Hollman dead at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of Hollman’s death.

A body has been found along Leesburg Pike near the Spring Hill Metro station, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The deceased man was found in the 8500 block of Leesburg Pike, which spans from the Audi dealership to an office building just north of the Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealerships in Tysons.

Detectives have started an investigation into the man’s death, the police department tweeted.

“At this point there appears to be no threat to public safety,” the tweet said. “Please avoid the area.”

Authorities are investigating a fatal fire in McLean.

The fire broke out Saturday at a home on the 1400 block of Brookhaven Drive. Firefighters from Fairfax County and Arlington County extinguished the blaze, but FCPD reported one fatality.

NBC 4 reported Saturday night that the deceased was an elderly woman and that an oxygen tank might have exploded during the fire.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Route 50 — “Officers responded to the report of a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on Arlington Boulevard near Summerfield Road, at approximately six [Friday] night. The pedestrian was crossing Arlington Boulevard, not in a crosswalk, and was hit by a dark colored mid to full-size pickup truck with an open bed. A 75-year-old McLean man was struck by a car and killed last night near the intersection of Route 123 and Chain Bridge Road.

Police say Philip Dietz was crossing Route 123 just before 10 p.m. when he was struck by a driver in a BMW heading southbound. He died from his injuries.

All southbound lanes of Route 123 were closed for an extended period of time last night while a crash reconstruction team worked to investigate the collision, according to VDOT.

Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the intersection of Dolley Madison Boulevard and Madison McLean Drive. Philip John Dietz, 75, of McLean, was attempting to cross Dolley Madison Boulevard around 9:55 last night. The driver of a 2002 BMW was traveling southbound in the right lane of Dolley Madison Boulevard when he hit Dietz in the intersection. Investigators are working to determine if Dietz used the marked crosswalk with the pedestrian signal at the time of the crash. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for anyone involved. The driver remained at the scene and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once the investigation is complete, the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney will review the case and determine if the driver will be charged.
