Tysons’ new Burlington is currently closed due to a trash compactor fire earlier this month — but may reopen soon.

Signs on the door say that the store is temporarily closed. “We apologize for the inconvenience,” the sign says.

The store opened at 8355 Leesburg Pike in September.

Smoke entered the store from a fire in a trash compactor behind the building on Oct. 4, Ashley Hildebrandt, a spokesperson for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, told Tysons Reporter.

A reader told Tysons Reporter that the Burlington has been closed since at least Sunday, Oct. 6.

Tysons Reporter reached out to Burlington to ask when the store closed and when it plans to reopen. This story will be updated if the company responds.

Two employees at nearby Burlington stores said that while a reopening date has not been announced yet, they have heard that the store may reopen by next week.

Columbus Day — also known as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in some areas — is coming up on Monday (Oct. 14).

For people staying in the Tysons area, some government facilities will be closed and public transit options will be operating on modified schedules.

Tysons Reporter has rounded up a list of public services that will be affected by the upcoming holiday on Monday.

County-wide

• All county offices, schools and libraries will be closed.
• The Circuit and General District Courts will be closed.
• The Fairfax Connector will operate on a Holiday Weekday Service where certain routes will run every 12-15 minutes.
• United States Postal Service offices will be closed.

Vienna

• The Vienna Community Center will have reduced hours from 10 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.
• The Town of Vienna’s government offices will be closed.

McLean

• The McLean Community Center will be closed.
• The Old Firehouse will be open.

Falls Church

• The City of Falls Church’s government offices and buildings will be closed.
• The Mary Riley Styles Public Library will be closed.
• Falls Church Community Center (223 Little Falls Street) will be open from 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

The City of Falls Church and the Town of Vienna recognize Oct. 14, 2019 as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”

“Celebrating the two holidays on the same day is a way to inform our understanding of each group’s contributions to our national fabric without demeaning the significance of either,” according to a Falls Church press release.

Speaking of closures, Tysons Reporter will be taking a break as well on Monday.

Labor Day is coming up on Monday (Sept. 2). For people staying in the Tysons area for the holiday weekend, some government facilities will be closed and public transit options will be operating on modified schedules.

• The Town of Vienna’s government offices will be closed Labor Day.

McLean

• The McLean Community Center will be closed on Labor Day.

Falls Church

• The City of Falls Church’s government offices and buildings will be closed Labor Day.
• The City Council Work Session, originally scheduled for Monday, will be moved to Tuesday (Sept. 3) at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center (223 Little Falls Street).
• The Mary Riley Styles Public Library will be closed on Sunday (Sept. 1) and Monday (Sept. 2).
• Falls Church Community Center will be closed for cleaning until Tuesday (Sept. 3).

Speaking of closed offices, Tysons Reporter will be on a break as well on Monday.

The history room at the Mary Riley Styles Public Library in the City of Falls Church will temporarily close beginning Sunday, Aug. 18.

The closure comes after the city’s decision to revamp the room, which officials said is not in a position to meet the growing demand, into a “larger, more prominent” space at the aging library (120 N. Virginia Avenue).

The renovation includes adding 3,174 square feet, along with new features that will ensure a quieter and more comfortable experience for visitors.

“The new room will also again have regular weekly hours to encourage drop-ins and generally increase access,” the website said.

While the renovations are taking place, the files and documentation will be placed in storage and won’t be available for public access until the renovation is completed in late 2020 or early 2021. However, people can still search for photos, death notices and obituaries online.

By 2033, the library’s website said it expects more than 35,000 people to take advantage of the sources available in the history room.

As work continues on the Jones Branch Connector project, drivers can expect nightly closures on and around the bridge this week.

The ramps from the eastbound Dulles Toll Road and the eastbound Dulles Airport Access Road to southbound I-495 are scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m.-4 a.m. from today (Monday) to Friday (June 21), according to VDOT.

VDOT said drivers can take the following detours:

• eastbound Dulles Toll Road to southbound I-495: Eastbound Dulles Toll Road and southbound Route 123 (Exit 19A) back to the southbound I-495
• eastbound Dulles Airport Access Road to southbound I-495: Northbound I-495 and westbound Route 193 (Exit 44) back to the southbound I-495
• eastbound Dulles Toll Road traffic will still be able to access the southbound 495 Express Lanes

Additionally, Scotts Crossing Road closures between Jones Branch Drive and the I-495 Express Lanes will be closed during those times as well.

The closure will let workers continue work on the bridge, which is part of the $60 million project to relieve traffic along Route 123 at the I-495 interchange.

Pedestrians can expect the Jones Branch Connector sidewalk to open mid- to late summer.

The entire project is slated to finish this fall.

Vera Bradley will soon pack its quilted bags and say goodbye to Tysons Corner Center.

A sign by the entrance says that the handbag and luggage store will close on Friday (April 26) and encourages shoppers to visit its other locations at the Fair Oaks and Westfield Montgomery malls.

The imminent closure is the latest of a few ones this spring at the mall.

After filing for bankruptcy in February, women’s clothing chain Charlotte Russe had steep sales throughout March before closing up shop. Currently, the sizeable space on the second level by Barnes and Noble is vacant.

Gymboree shuttered more than 800 stores, including its location on the first floor of Tysons Corner Center, after filing for bankruptcy in January. The children’s clothing retailer, which was in business for 43 years, plans to sell its Janie and Jack brand, according to news reports. (The Janie and Jack store is still open on the second level.)

Gymboree’s last day of business was last Saturday, April 20, according to its Facebook page for the Tysons Corner Center location.

Home goods and decor store Dietch’ left its spot on March 31 after opening in the mall in August.

“We couldn’t afford the rent anymore and the business wasn’t as good as expected,” an employee at Dietch’ wrote in response to Tysons Reporter’s inquiries on the closure.

The former linens-focused store has barely visible writing on the glass saying “unique home furnishings and accessories.”

While the mall hasn’t announced new tenants for the vacancies yet, several newcomers are slated to arrive soon elsewhere in the mall, including 7-Eleven, an Italian legwear store, Morphe Cosmetics and a bubble tea shop. Recently, All Star Sports, shorts chain Chubbies and Bubbles opened.

The Tysons branch of Republik Coffee, which opened last June near Tysons Galleria, could face eviction within the week.

The coffee bar occupies a high visibility corner of Highgate at the Mile (7915 Jones Branch Drive), the first in a series of new mixed-use developments planned for the area.

Owner Talha Sarac said the eviction notice is part of a misunderstanding with Kettler, which owns Highgate at the Mile. Sarac said he met with Kettler representatives last week to discuss issues related to the building’s rent and believed everything had been settled.

Steven Tracy, property manager for Highgate, said he could not comment on an ongoing issue and the Kettler management office could not be reached for comment.

Sarac said he expected the issue to be cleared up imminently, but the eviction notice from the county sheriff’s office said the property must be vacated by Feb. 27.

It’s cold out and the snow is still piling up in the streets, but that hasn’t kept some stores from opening. Tysons currently has around three inches of snow on the ground.

Tysons Corner Center said in a tweet this morning that it would be open, though individual retailers within the store might be closed.

The security office at Tysons Galleria said that the mall is closed today as a result of the snow.

The Tower Club Tysons will be open with a limited menu until 2 p.m., with an anticipated opening and normal hours at 7 a.m. on Thursday.

While the emergency departments remain open, Inova’s physical therapy location in Tysons is closed today, as are several other Inova programs across the county. Ninotch massage and sports therapy also announced its Tysons location is closed today.

The lunch special event at TenPenh near Tysons Galleria is also postponed, though the restaurant remains open.

Vienna government facilities and community centers are closed today. Maple Avenue Restaurant in Vienna announced that it would also be closed today.

All library branches are closed today as is the Fairfax Animal Shelter, which advised locals to stay cuddled up at home with their pets.

The goal was never really to make money, but Fairfax News editor and publisher James Hood said the costs have just been too much to keep the local news site running. In one month, the website that’s been covering local news since 1998 will shut down for good.

“It’s a difficult market,” Hood said. “Between the city and the parts of the county, Fairfax is very amorphous. We’ve never been hyper-local, we wanted to do the kind of regional coverage the Washington Post does, but with Virginia on top rather than the District.”

Hood launched several successful online ventures including Consumer Affairs, but Fairfax News was never sustainable enough to pay for a team of reporters to run it on its own.

“I was never really able to give Fairfax News the attention it needed,” said Hood. “And revenue was increasingly difficult. Years ago, I could put up a couple Google ads up and the site could have earned a few dollars and I could put a few cents in my pocket, but not anymore.”

Hood said he put more of his focus on making the site technically smooth and functional, but looking back he said he wished he’d changed some of the priorities.

“I didn’t spend as much as I should have on the editorial side,” said Hood.

The end had been coming for a while. The stream of news stories dwindled over time and a few months ago, managing editor Ed Tobias departed from the site.

“I enjoyed working on the site,” said Hood, “but I’m in my 70s and I don’t want to have to do this every day. I couldn’t find anyone to sell it to and I didn’t want it to just wither away.”

Though the closure is much smaller on scale, Hood’s shuttering of Fairfax News is part of a nationwide spate of closures and layoffs at online news outlets.

“It’s hard right now,” said Hood. “Twenty years ago, if you were enterprising, you could make a living as a reporter covering Vienna. But those times are at abeyance. Will they come back? Who knows.”
