Every one of my clients looking to buy a home has “Outdoor Space” at the top of their priority list. For some, it’s a rooftop terrace or a wrap-around balcony where they can enjoy a drink with loved ones. Others are looking for a place to grill out with family and friends or a grassy area to throw the ball. Regardless of the use case, we all are looking for more fresh air this spring.

Combining last week’s announcements that COVID vaccines are readily accessible in Fairfax County, and the CDC’s latest guidance that fully vaccinated people can go without masks outside, it makes sense that outdoor space is in extremely high demand. So, how about we take a step outside… together!

Pet of the Week: Broccoli

Meet Broccoli, Tysons’ latest Pet of the Week. Broccoli has had a tough life, but he’s learning to trust again and is looking for a quiet home.

Here’s what Broccoli’s friends at 4Paws Rescue Team had to say about him:

Broccoli is a pretty boy who has been through a lot. You can see in his eyes that life hasn’t been so easy. He came to a shelter with an injured leg that had to be amputated but is now living in a foster home with a 4Paws volunteer. After these last few months, Broccoli now knows how good it can be living inside and being loved, and he is looking for a quiet forever home with a patient and loving adopter.

Despite his past troubles, Broccoli is learning to trust again and shows his affection in many ways. In his foster home, he follows his foster mom around, rubbing against her legs, laying down in front of her and staring at her nonstop.

To get your attention, Broccoli will make a cute little chirping noise and likes to greet you with a meow and with his head raised up, looking for head scritches. He loves to rub against everything around him, including his humans. He will roll around on the floor, showing off his tummy, as a sign of trust. He is still a bit cautious of new people, fast movements and being touched on his backside, but with a patient adopter he will continue to become more confident.

Even though Broccoli doesn’t have his left back leg, that hasn’t made him any less mobile. He can run, go up and down stairs, and get on and off the couch. He likes being able to look out windows.

Broccoli is highly motivated by wet food and will follow you around until he is fed. He has perfect litter box habits. In his foster home, he gets along with the two female cats who live there. He will do best in a home without rambunctious pets or children.

Broccoli came to 4Paws from Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter in Maryland. His estimated birth date is March 2014. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, has tested negative for Feline Leukemia and is microchipped.

Are you and Broccoli the perfect match?

Today marks the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week. To say this past year has been challenging for them is an understatement.

Each level is a new devil. Whether they teach elementary school students, middle, high school or even college — each level of education has had its own challenge this year.

I know many room moms are collecting donations to give a collective class gift for the elementary schools, but often middle and high school teachers get left behind.

If you’re looking for some ideas, here’s a short list:

  • A heartfelt note of appreciation and influence. My husband, who’s a high school teacher, has never seen the face of some of his students. He can’t make them turn their cameras on, and they chose to stay virtual. So it’s kind of hard to know if you’re having any kind of impact with literally ZERO interaction. If the teacher has made any kind of impact to your family this year, please share that with them. They may not know and I promise you an infusion of positivity and gratitude will help make everyone happier.
  • Monetary gifts. I know some sentimental gifts are great, but teachers really do love gift cards!

Thank you to all of our teachers for their effort this year!

Pet of the Week: Lulu

Meet Lulu, Tysons’ latest Pet of the Week. Lulu is a smiley lab/beagle mix who loves belly rubs.

Lulu’s friends at Traveling Tails Dog Rescue shared a message on her behalf:

Hi! I’m Lulu. I’m a sweet 60-pound girl who loves snuggles and belly rubs. I’m approximately 4 years old and found myself in a sad situation in a shelter in Tennessee after my family lost their home. Luckily, I was pulled by a rescue group, and I’m now getting a ton of love and attention from my foster family!

I have a gorgeous, happy smile and love everyone I meet! I’m up to date on vaccines, spayed and microchipped. My ideal family will be someone who will want to cuddle with me on the couch and enjoy my company. I hope to meet you soon!

Are you and Lulu the perfect match?

Coming up, we have Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7), end-of-year gifts for staff and teachers, and there are always house-warming gifts or birthdays.

If you need ANYTHING custom made, Lauren Brownlee, the owner of Holly + Clove is your girl. A Vienna native, she’s a solo entrepreneur, woman-owned business and creative magician.

My background is in statistics and economics, so my brain doesn’t work the way hers does. I recently came up with a concept I wanted to get made for my husband’s birthday — a “house divided” shirt with his long-time favorite Eagles and my youngest son’s oppositional favorite, the Patriots. All I did was tell Lauren what I wanted, and she created the entire thing. I didn’t even pick the shirt color because I just don’t work that way.

She’s made custom wood signs for people, lots of apparel, tumblers, blankets, koozies — literally anything you can dream up, she can make it.

Find her on Instagram at @HollyandClove, on Facebook at Facebook.com/HollyandClove or on her website, HollyandClove.com.
