Tysons’ Pet of the Week is Odelia and Oprah, a bonded mother-daughter duo.
Here’s what their friends at 4Paws Rescue Team had to say about them:
Odelia is a quiet, unassuming little tortie mama who is quite happy to watch you go about your day as she confidently observes from her napping spot. Odelia has such a loving, gentle soul. She will greet you affectionately when you get home and purrs sweetly as you give her gentle pets and ear rubs.
A nice, comfortable perch with a good view is Odelia’s favorite spot in the house. She has a healthy appetite for wet and dry food, along with perfect litter box manners. Odelia is very easy-going and will happily play with toys. She is good with other cats.
Oprah, Odelia’s daughter, is a fluffy little princess who wants all the attention! When you come home, Oprah is always happy to greet you with little chirps. She is outgoing, adventurous and full of curiosity. She has an abundance of energy and loves to play. Oprah’s favorite spot is near a window with a nice view, as she is an avid bird and squirrel watcher. This petite girl is always ready to explore!
Oprah is tidy with the litter box and enjoys both wet and dry food. She really loves her mom, but is fine with other cats, too.
Odelia and Oprah love to snuggle and play and have a tight mother-daughter bond, so they must be adopted together.
Odelia and Oprah came to 4Paws from Wise County Humane Society in southwestern Virginia. Odelia’s estimated birthdate is January 2017 and Oprah’s is July 2019. They have both been spayed, are current on vaccinations, have tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia, and are microchipped.

If you’ve been reading these for a while, many of you know I’m a Vienna-based Realtor® and mom, and I’m also married to a public school educator. My perspective of schools around the area is influenced by so many different factors.
I have a lot of homebuyers right now who don’t have kids (yet) and are going strictly off school ratings when deciding where they should live. However, school ratings are not the be-all and end-all of how to pick a school system for a child.
Here’s what I wish I had known before I had kids, before I moved to Vienna, and before I bought a house tied to a school.
You have no idea what raising kids will be like until you have them. Will both parents work? Will one stay home? Will one job be flexible enough to drop off/pick up? For example…
- School hours vary by individual school. Some elementary schools start at 8:30 and others start at 9:15. Will you need before and/or after-school care? Not every school has that on site (it’s called SACC). For instance, Louise Archer buses kids to Flint Hill ES or Vienna ES. Marshall Road has a long waitlist, and some kids get bussed to the rec center.
- Maybe you don’t need full-time after-school care, but an extra day or two a week for the kid(s) to stay late at school to socialize won’t hurt. Did you know some schools bring in awesome organizations to run after-school activities? Some others don’t.
Do you have a set idea of what kind of education you want your child to have?
Here’s an example: Not every school offers a second language. (This one really blows my mind.) Wolftrap offers Mandarin. Colvin Run, Cunningham Park, Flint Hill, Franklin Sherman, Haycock, Churchill Road all do, too. Kent Gardens offers French. Archer and Vienna Elementary? No second language at all.
What about the gifted and talented program? Do you know what the Advanced Academic Program is?
In the second grade, all of the students take a standardized test, along with an application to the AAP program (which is really the gifted and talented program). Many of the kids who get in will go, which will make the home school classes smaller. For others, they may choose to stay at their home school because some have a level IV center on site. (Cunningham Park, Chesterbrook, Franklin Sherman, Marshall Road, Wolftrap, etc.) Otherwise, you’re really relying on the “Gifted Education Teacher” at the school to give advanced opportunities to your child.
What is the school community like?
This one is hard because I don’t think many people talk about the social dynamics in the parent scene at schools. Is it cliquey? Is there a large engagement with the PTA? Are there opportunities to meet other parents?
I have found even at a small elementary school, the best opportunity to meet other parents is at the playground after school. If you’re a working parent and can’t do that, you’re toast. The next best thing is through sports (VYI, VLL, etc.), but they don’t always group the kids by school, so you’re not guaranteed to be on a team with your neighborhood school kids. Ask around on this one. Check the PTA social pages for engagement.

Tysons’ Pet of the Week is Beau, an energetic pup who loves hiking and playing fetch but also cuddling up on the couch.

Beau is a 1-year-old Aussie-mix, who had a bit of a rough start to his life and is ready for his loving forever home!
While initially skeptical of some people, Beau opens up quickly over a game of fetch and shows his goofy, playful self. You’re sure to win him over if you can throw the tennis ball for hours! If you’re looking for a high-energy dog to play with and take on hikes that also likes to cuddle with you, this is the one. Beau loves to run and play with you and/or other dogs for hours, but at the end (or the middle) of the day, there’s nothing he wants more than to curl up and cuddle with you!
Beau gets along wonderfully with his foster brother and would be happy to play all day with a resident dog or be your one and only that gets all the love and attention. Beau is looking for an active, adults-only home with a fenced yard and dog experience. He is great with other friendly, playful dogs, but he doesn’t like those pesky smaller creatures like cats or bunnies!
If you’re looking for a smart, active pup that learns quickly and knows basic commands, is house-trained and loves to play (with humans and canines), then Beau would like you to apply to be his best friend!

This past weekend was the opening day for Vienna Little League. It’s a reminder of some normalcy, some fun for the kids, and it was just a really beautiful weekend to enjoy it… until I got home Saturday evening after watching two games (both of my kids play).
My 6-year-old had eyes swollen to the size of the baseballs he just threw. Lucky for all of us, there’s Dr. Karen Kaufman. I see her as well because my son inherited his affliction from me.
Dr. Kaufman is a local Vienna mom, a veteran, female entrepreneur and all-around very kind human. She’s also a fantastic doctor.
My first consult with her lasted two hours because we talked about everything so she had a full picture of what kind of care I needed. Since when does a doctor do that?
If it’s time you stopped ignoring your allergies — or to stop suffering from them year after year — go see her. She’s located in Vienna at 8320 Old Courthouse Road, Suite 310.

Virginia Tech’s Evening MBA program is among the best in the country, according to a 2022 survey of the nation’s top graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report.
In the newly released rankings of Best Part-time MBA programs, Virginia Tech’s Falls Church-based program is ranked No. 28 overall and No. 1 in Virginia.
In addition, Virginia Tech’s Arlington-based Executive MBA was named the nation’s fifth best by GreatBusinessSchools.org.
“The rankings reflect our commitment to providing students with top-quality education, immersive experiences, and a robust network that will strengthen their career prospects for years to come, all at a high-value tuition rate,” said Dana Hansson, director of MBA programs at Virginia Tech.
In January, Virginia Tech announced it will expand this commitment by offering a fully online MBA program.
“Accommodating students with virtual learning over the last year across all of our MBA formats allowed us to explore fully online delivery as a permanent option through the recently announced Online MBA. This new program seats its inaugural cohort this summer, and we’re already encouraged by the level of interest and strength of the applications we’ve received,” said Hansson.
The online program will build on the strength of Virginia Tech’s already established programs, said Parviz Ghandforoush, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business.
“The new format allowed us to combine some of the tried and true features of our established in-person MBA formats and online master of information technology to craft the best possible educational experience for students who value consistent interaction with their classmates and also want the flexibility of an online program,” Ghandforoush said.
Program leadership is encouraged by the latest recognition for its Evening and Executive formats and looks forward to expanding its suite of part-time programs.
“Our strategic focus since 2013 has been to provide working professionals with flexible options that fit into their personal and professional lives. We’re excited to provide this new opportunity to professionals across the globe who want to further their careers and join our talented group of students and alumni who are proud to call themselves Hokies,” Hansson said.

Tysons’ Pet of the Week is Boomer and Frisky, two fellas who were transported up from Texas after the winter storm earlier this year.
Here’s what their new friends at 4Paws Rescue Team had to say about them:
Meet Boomer and Frisky! They came up together from Texas when it was freezing over. Now they are best friends. It would be great if they could stay together as a pair.
Boomer is the orange and white big guy. Boomer is a talker and rather demanding of his attention. Boomer is very tolerant and would do fine with children of any age. Boomer is dealing with some allergies, but with half a Zyrtec a day, he’s fine.
Frisky is the younger brown tabby. Frisky takes a bit longer to warm up, but he is just as affectionate once he’s settled in. Frisky has made friends with his human foster brother, and is fine with older children.
Both are immensely sweet. They absolutely love being petted and will crawl into your lap to get affection. They follow you around and come out to greet you. They both enjoy being brushed and are tolerant of having their claws clipped. Neither of them are picky about food, and they both have great litter box habits.
Boomer’s estimated birth date in October 2017 and Frisky’s is June 2019. Both cats have been neutered, are current on vaccinations, have tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia, and are microchipped.
