Update at 4 p.m. — Fairfax County Public Schools will be closed Monday, the school system just announced.

All Fairfax County public schools will be closed Mon. Jan. 14, 2019, due to the snow and hazardous travel conditions. School offices and central offices will open 2 hours late, to be opened by 10:00 a.m. (Cond 5) with an unscheduled leave policy in effect for 12-month employees.

Earlier: The snowiest D.C. area storm since 2016 is starting to wind down — though more snow is on the way and another 2-3 inches of accumulation possible.

VDOT crews have been working hard to clear roads throughout Fairfax County, but officials are still urging residents to stay home due to slick conditions.

Earlier this afternoon Virginia State Police said troopers in its Fairfax Division have responded to 34 crashes and 52 disabled vehicles since midnight. Statewide, more than 230 crashes were handled by VSP during that timeframe.

“Drivers be advised — looks can be and are deceiving!” state police said. “Highways may appear to be clear, but slick and icy conditions still exist.”

“On the second day of winter weather across northern Virginia, drivers are asked to continue to avoid unnecessary travel for crews to safely clear accumulating snow,” VDOT urged.

As of 1 p.m., just over 6 inches of snow had fallen on McLean, according to the National Weather Service.

In Tysons, NBC 4’s David Culver has been broadcasting from the parking lot of a local shopping center for most of the day.

The Vienna Community Center is closed today and “all programs, services, and rental activities for today (January 13) are cancelled,” according to the Town of Vienna.

In the City of Falls Church, a snow emergency has been declared and parking restrictions are in place.

Snow Plowing: All roads are treated. Snow Routes are plowed and crews are working on side streets. We expect another front, so we'll make more passes, first concentrating on Snow Routes.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency tonight (Saturday) as this weekend’s winter storm got underway.

The storm is expected to drop 6-12 inches of snow on Fairfax County over the next 24 hours or so.

Snow is now accumulating on local yards, parking lots and side roads throughout the county. A Winter Storm Warning, meanwhile, is in effect through Sunday evening.

VDOT, which is responsible for clearing snow from roads in Fairfax County — except for those that are privately owned — is urging residents to remain inside during the storm if at all possible.

For Vienna residents impacted by the government shutdown, not only is free pet food available at a nearby pet store, but the town government is offering water bill payment extensions and limited part-time employment opportunities.

Payment deadlines for Town of Vienna water bills due at the end of the month will be extended for furloughed federal employees until after the federal government reopens. According to the press release:

“Any late fees will be waived. To apply for payment extension, furloughed Town of Vienna water customers must show proof of federal employment (via a badge or pay stub) at the finance counter at Town Hall from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.”

For those seeking part-time employment during the shutdown, in addition to Fairfax County Public Schools offering short-term substitute teacher positions, the town will be offering work in the parks and public works departments over the next four weeks.

According to the press release:

“Using funds available due to job attrition, the Town is offering part-time employment in areas where the Town currently has gaps. Tasks include assisting at the community center front desk, parks maintenance work, and filing and scanning. Furloughed employees living in the Town of Vienna will receive hiring preference. Federal employees interested in these part-time opportunities may apply online at viennava.gov/employment or in person at Town Hall or call Human Resources at 703-255- 6362.”

If you’re a government employee with a pet at home, you don’t need to worry about affording food for your animal.

Kriser’s Natural Pet, a pet store chain featuring natural food, treats and supplies, is offering free food to furloughed government employees.

“As part of this community, we just couldn’t sit idly by and watch our friends suffer and stretch to make ends meet,” the store said in a press release. “If you have a pet and have been affected by the shutdown, come in. Show us your government employee ID and we’ll give you a comparable bag of food that your pet is eating for free.”

The store has a location in Vienna at 144 Maple Ave W. and in Tysons at 7505 Leesburg Pike inside the Whole Foods shopping center. There are also two locations in Arlington, one at the Lee-Harrison Shopping Center (2501 N. Harrison Street) and another in the Courthouse-Clarendon area (2509 N. Franklin Road).

Kriser’s has a variety of food types available for cats and dogs. While you’re there, if you’re looking for something to keep the pet busy over a snowed-in weekend, the stores also have a variety of toys and treats for cats and dogs.

Information on where and when is scarce, but Deka Lash, a cosmetic boutique focusing on eyelash extensions, is planning on coming to the Mosaic District sometime this spring.

Meghann Klein, a communications contact for EDENS, Inc, which manages the Mosaic District, said the new “lash bar” will be a boutique beauty experience expected to open later this year. A representative from Deka Lash said other information about the spot, including where in the Mosaic District it would be located, is not yet available.

Deka Lash is a small chain that launched in Pittsburgh in 2011. Options range from “classic lashes” to more dramatic “true volume” sets.

Full eyelash appointments take an average of two hours, or one hour and 15 minutes for a re-lash appointment.

One pint of donated blood can save up to three lives.

Even if you’re squeamish about needles, next Friday (Jan. 18) is a chance to overcome that fear and donate to the Inova Blood Drive.

From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the Inova Blood Drive will be held at the Vienna Community Center at 120 Cherry Street SE.

For those who can’t make it out to the blood drive on Friday, the closest spot to donate is the Woodburn Donor Center at 3289 Woodburn Road.

Appointments can be made online or by calling 866-BLOODSAVES and using the sponsor code 1058.

Donors will receive a pair of “lifesaver” socks. This year’s sock is blue with white snowflakes that include various blood types.

As the national chain files for bankruptcy, the Performance Bicycle Shop in Pike 7 Plaza is going out of business.

Like the nearby Pier 1 Imports, the imminent closure of the store also means much of the store’s supply is on steep sales. Helmets and other equipment normally sold for over $100 is priced at around $30.

Items in the store range from bicycles, including specialized recumbent bicycles, to smaller bicycle accessories like bells and chain lube. Yesterday (Thursday) was the first day fixtures in the store were also on sale, from wall racks to the vacuum cleaner.

A manager at the store said the business likely has a week or two before it fully closes. He estimated Jan. 27 will be the store’s final day.

Despite the impending closure, staff at the store still maintained a bit of gallows humor. The manager at the store was directing customers to items with the highest sales and asking if any of the people stopping by for accessories needed a bike-rack capable of storing 12 bicycles.

When one woman walked in with a bike broken into three pieces, staff told her that the store was no longer accepting maintenance work and that the shop’s repair team had been recently laid off.

But when she mentioned one of the staff by name, the discombobulated bicycle was recognized as a “special project” and she was directed to the back of the store where the few remaining employees were still helping Tysonians with their bicycle problems.

One month after opening, Andy’s Pizza is the go-to spot in Tysons Galleria for a slice of New York-style pizza.

But now that the holiday rush has settled, the restaurant aims to expand its ambitions and become a go-to spot for a craft beer.

“We’re going to have wine, but we’re really excited about the craft beer,” said Emily Brown, who co-opened the restaurant with her cousin Andy Brown, the co-founder of D.C.-based Eat Pizza. “Mostly it’s from the east coast and particularly local places.”

Brown said the idea of using primarily local beers is in keeping with the theme of Taste of Urbanspace, a food hall that opened in early December after the high-profile collapse of the Isabella Eatery. The core concept of Taste of Urbanspace is opening new locations for local favorites.

Andy’s Pizza offers pizza by the slice, from simple cheese pizza at $3.49 to whole pies loaded with a variety of toppings for $18.99. The restaurant also has caesar salads with croutons borrowed from the Stomping Ground eatery next door.

Brown said her cousin’s passion is for pizza, but her true love is the craft beer scene. Her focus is going to be on maintaining a regularly changing menu, bringing in the newest and highest-profile beers from throughout the area.

She compared the beer scene to the sneaker scene, where people regularly line up to check out the newest release. Brown said the same is true in the beer scene, where connoisseurs congregate outside Richmond breweries to get a sampling of the latest batch. It’s that level of expertise and hipness to the zeitgeist that Brown said she hopes to bring to the bar-side of Andy’s Pizza.

Tysons has something of a chronic nightlife problem, and Brown hopes that some of the new drinking choices at Andy’s Pizza and other spots across the Taste of Urbanspace can help turn the mall’s food court into a social scene.

“If you’re coming in for lunch and you’re into beer, we want to have the kind of menu that will have you coming back in after work,” said Brown.

When the new bar comes online is dependent on when the licenses are approved by state regulator. Andy’s Taste of Urbanspace neighbors Donburi, Sen Khao, and Stomping Grounds are all also applying for alcohol licenses.

When you do come in for that first drink, Brown suggests a crisp pilsner would pair well with the pizza.

Vienna may have its share of controversies, but overall, local residents are apparently pretty big fans of the town.

Last October, the town participated in the National Citizen Survey, a survey aimed at helping local governments understand their citizens’ perspective on their community.

The town received a relatively high amount of feedback, with 695 residents or 45 percent of those surveyed answering.

“Responding residents rated Vienna as excellent or good as a place to raise children (98%), as a place to live (96%), and for quality of life (94%),” according to a Town of Vienna press release. “Nine in 10 Vienna residents would recommend living in the community to someone who asked.”

The survey is conducted by the National Research Center (NRC). In 65 of the 126 categories, local residents rated Vienna higher than residents in comparable communities rated theirs. The highest rated category was for safety-related services.

The four areas Vienna ranked lower than comparable communities were for traffic flow, ease of travel by car, affordable housing, and the number of residents who work in Vienna.
