The bike infrastructure in Tysons is still in a transitional state, with plenty of opportunities to add to and improve existing bike routes in the area.

One big win for cycling in Tyson was the addition of Capital Bikeshare stations near Metro stations and business hubs in 2016.

There are now nearly a dozen Capital Bikeshare stations around Tysons, up from the original 8. Meanwhile, a pilot program recently added powered e-bikes to the local CaBi fleet.

So where are the current bikeshare stations in Tysons? The system map lists the following 11 stations:

  • Towers Crescent Dr & Tysons One Pl
  • Tysons One Pl & Chain Bridge Rd
  • Tysons Corner Station
  • Westpark & Jones Branch Dr
  • Greensboro & International Dr
  • Greensboro & Pinnacle Dr
  • Westpark Dr & Leesburg Pike
  • Westpark & Park Run Dr
  • Spring Hill Metro
  • Tysons West Transit Center
  • Jones Branch & Westbranch Dr

Improvements to bicycle routes near the Vienna Metro station may have to wait.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors deferred a vote on an agreement to move forward on the Vienna Metro Bike Connection Improvement Project. The agreement with VDOT was brought forward as an action item at the Sept. 25 Board of Supervisors meeting but was deferred without explanation.

The project aims to enhance bike access to the Vienna Metro station and Metro West Town Center, as well as other roads and bridges in the surrounding area. The project includes bike wayfinding signage and shared lane markings.

The improvements follow a 2016 study of bicycle accessibility to the Vienna Metro station.

The project was first endorsed by the Board of Supervisors on Oct. 24, 2017, as part of a transportation alternatives package. If approved by the board, it will be funded with $800,000 in grants from VDOT, with a local match requirement of $200,000. The funds were identified in the County budget but requires Board of Supervisors approval.

While car and metro are still the go-to for many Tyson commuters, some local establishments are working to make bicycling a little more accessible.

Towers Crescent, a sprawling four building mixed-use complex, recently added new bicycle parking and repair tools inside the parking garage on-site and on the nearby streets. Towers Crescent also created a series of bicycle maps for riders to navigate around the North Tysons area.

Across the broader Tysons area, Access Tysons, a collaboration between Tysons Corner Center and government partners, has put together a detailed map of bike routes throughout Tysons and a guide of where to park at the Tysons Corner Center.
