The weather yesterday couldn’t have been nicer, and it has me already itching for summer! Lazy days at the pool, beach trips and no more computer screens.
It got me thinking: Where can we take a dip in an indoor pool these days? Coupled with a daytime “staycation,” a nice swim might help break up the days.
- Fairfax County Pools: Buy tickets a week in advance (Sunday tickets open up for the Monday a week away, etc. On April 4, tickets go on sale for April 12.)
- Spring Hill Rec Center — McLean
- Oak Marr Rec Center — Oakton
- Cub Run Rec Center — Chantilly
- Providence Rec Center — Annandale
- Lifetime Fitness (Fairfax or Reston): Call and ask about passes/times
- Machine Performance Center (Vienna): Over 18 only for open swim
- George Mason Aquatic Center (Fairfax): See hours online and call for more details
- My favorite idea: Book the cheapest hotel room possible with an indoor pool (like the Hilton Garden Inn in Falls Church), go swimming and then let the kids watch a movie. A lot of the indoor pools at hotels are closed due to COVID-19, so make sure you call first.

Tysons’ Pet of the Week is Heidi, a gentle and sensitive dog who’s estimated to be about four to five years old.
Here’s what her friends at Operation Underdog WV had to say about her:
Our newest girl is Heidi, and she is a delight! This pretty girl even had a smile on her face for her shelter intake photo. We’ve recently gotten her into a foster home and she’s sweet as can be. She is doing well with resident dogs and does not appear to be concerned with outside cats, though we have not tested her with an indoor cat at this time. She walks pretty well on a leash and enjoys going out for walks.
Heidi is doing better with house-training but will still need consistency and continued reinforcement in her adoptive home. She is a gentle and sensitive dog, so praise and positive methods are best for her.
Heidi had at least a recent period of struggle in her life. She is thin, was covered in ticks and has worn paw pads. Due to some teeth tarter and wear in the front, we are estimating she is 4 to 5 years old. Her ideal weight is probably going to be around 50 lbs. She is relatively quiet so would likely work in a home with shared walls, etc. Email for an application.

I’ve been looking for things to do with my kids during spring break that are different and out of the usual. I came across the idea of an ice cream tour through Virginia. I put together a list of some places worthy of a sugar rush:

Tysons’ Pet of the Week is Noi (aka Baby Girl), a young tabby who loves cuddles.
Here’s what her friends at 4Paws Rescue Team have to say about her:
Meet Noi, a young short-haired grey tabby with soulful green eyes.
Noi’s foster family calls her Baby Girl, since she acts like such a sweet baby. She actually allows you to cuddle her and carry her around like one!
This shy yet gentle young lady loves ear and head scratches and being with her human companions.
Noi is an expert at making tunnels out of blankets and pillows, and you can often find her squeezing herself into the tiniest of spaces to take naps.
She would do best in a quiet home without dogs, young children or other cats.
Noi came to 4Paws from a small shelter in Kentucky. Her birthdate is estimated to be March 2020. She is spayed, current on vaccinations, has tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia, and is microchipped.

What a gorgeous day! I know days like today inspire me to get things done — like sorting through broken toys, clothes my boys have outgrown or random tools scattered around my garage.
The coming spring means spring cleaning, and donating items to those who may need them. If you’re looking for ways to help the community, please consider one of these local organizations to donate your used goods:
- Community Cares Vienna: This local organization is collecting food donations for food-insecure families and coordinating efforts to provide clothing to families.
- Buy Nothing Project: Give away things for free locally Vienna’s Buy Nothing group on Facebook.
- Share of McLean (Note: Share does not accept clothing, shoes or household item donations.)
- Unique Merrifield: Unique accepts secondhand clothing and household good donations on behalf of Special Olympics Virginia.
- Goodwill in Fairfax: The donation center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Habitat for Humanity in Herndon: You can drop off donations or schedule a pickup.
- Freecycle: The Freecycle Network is a nonprofit that allows you to give items away for free locally.
- Vietnam Veterans of America: You can schedule an online pickup at your home. They especially need clothes in addition to household goods.
- GreenDrop: They support the National Federation of the Blind, Purple Heart and American Red Cross. GreenDrop can provide you with a drop-off location or a scheduled pickup at your home.
- Women Giving Back: This nonprofit is based in Sterling, but there are drop-off sites in Vienna. They accept women’s and children’s clothing and accessories
- Suited for Change: Suited for Change is accepting women’s clothing donations in D.C. This is business attire and, due to COVID-19, clothing donations must be freshly dry-cleaned.
