Later this week, the McLean Project for the Arts will unveil its latest exhibition: Sculpture NOW.
The new exhibition will feature over 50 pieces from the Washington Sculpture Group, according to a press release. AÂ complete list of artists can be found online.
Interested community members are invited to attend a virtual exhibit opening reception on Thursday (Sept. 17) from 7-8 p.m.
Those who want to engage with the display further can either register to see the works in person or attend a virtual art talk which will be held on Oct. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m., the press releases added. There will be limited availability for in-person viewing of the exhibit.
“Sculpture NOW” will be on display until Nov. 14, the press release said.

(Updated 10/23) –Hawk & Griffin, a new British pub coming to Vienna will offer guests the chance to enjoy British culture.
Located at 435 Maple Avenue West, the restaurant and bar will offer a place for people to hang out with friends and family, according to co-owners Michael Burgess and Thomas Kyllo.
The space will feature amenities such as a stage for live music performances and viewing parties of sports like rugby and soccer, a regular dining area, a bar, an outdoor sitting area, an area for patrons to toss around some darts and two “snugs.”
Originally intended as a “proper” place for women to hang out in British history, Kyllo said that two snugs included in the space will be meant for small group gathering places where people can host book clubs, parties or even use as a space for musical jam sessions.
The exterior of the building itself is designed after the Edwardian Era, which ranged from 1900-1915, according to Kyllo.
Menu items will include traditional British fare, according to award-winning chief Burgess, who also owns Pure Pasty in Vienna.
Along with dinner and lunch, the pub will also offer brunch on weekends, the owners said.
The inspiration for the eatery came to the owners after they felt there was a gap in the market for a mid-range, mid-price place around town that emphasizes the comfort of its guests.
“We’ve got great restaurants in Vienna, there’s no shortage of that,” Burgess said, but added that there isn’t anywhere where people can feel like they’re walking into a small British village for a pint.
Tieing the eatery back to the community, the owners said they decided to name the pub after James Madison High School and Marshall High School, where Kyllo volunteers as a coach and whose mascots are the Warhawks and Griffen.
“We want everything down to the name to reflect the community we are in,” Kyllo said.
The anticipated opening date for the pub is March 1, 2021, according to Kyllo, who said that the COVID-19 pandemic threw a curveball into their plans.
“Early next year hopefully we’ll have a better path out of this and people will be used to going back into restaurants and indoors,” said Kyllo.

To attract talent to the Northern Virginia area, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority is hosting a workshop for regional companies.
The online Talent Attraction Workshop: Marketing Northern Virginia will take place Tuesday (Sept. 15) from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m. and help employers understand what draws people to the area and how to recruit talented individuals, according to a press release.
There are roughly 80,000 currently untilled positions in the region, the website said.
“The workshop will also reveal top findings from talent perception research commissioned by the FCEDA, as well as findings from a national survey of 1,600+ people recently conducted by Development Counsellors International (DCI) — the leader in marketing places,” the press release said.
For those who are interested, the event will also include an introduction to an online hub for talent to learn about career opportunities and relocation information.
“The hub includes a job board with 90,000+ active listings in Northern Virginia, upskilling and training resources, a cost of living calculator, a community finder quiz and more.”

Autumn is approaching and the Vienna Community Center is hosting a native plant event this weekend.
From 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 12), people can gather at the Vienna Community Center (120 SE Cherry Street) to buy a variety of fall-friendly plants, learn how to make rain barrels, educate themselves about stormwater and participate in other activities, according to the event flyer.
Hill House Nursery will be on site with perennials, shrubs and trees, the flyer said.
“The plants we offer are chosen for their aesthetic qualities, their durability, their vigor, and their wildlife benefits,” according to the nursery’s website.
For people who want to pre-order greenery, pickup will be available as well at the event. Those interested can email Hill House Nursery.
To keep everyone safe, event organizers ask that attendees wear face-masks, refrain from touching merchandise before purchasing and practice social distancing.

As kids return to the classroom, Tysons Reporter wants to know how parents and the community feel about this current school year.
The Fairfax County Public School Board debated the best practices for the start of the school year and ultimately decided to begin with a primarily virtual classroom — incorporating varied in-person learning opportunities for certain ages.
FCPS released a portal to help families work out technical issues that caused confusion in the spring.
Despite attempts to confront potential issues, Fairfax County officials previously expressed concern about the lack of childcare opportunities for parents who work full-time jobs while their kids are in school.
To fix this, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to allow county staff to work with FCPS on ways to improve resources and support systems for working families.

Prompted by the pandemic, a Tysons based company is stepping up to fill orders for personal protective equipment in the D.C. area.
Personal Protective Equipment USA offers a variety of products including face shields, sneeze guards, custom masks and gloves, the website said.
So far, notable local customers include Vienna Va Foodies, Inca Social and The Town of Vienna, according to owner Ramiro Parada.
“Vienna Foodies have already ordered close to 1000 masks from us to raise funds for first responders and underprivileged families,” Parada said. “It’s been a great hit.”
Though the fundraiser is now closed, according to the Vienna Va Foodies Facebook page, the group was selling red, baby blue and black masks for $10 each.
Unlike similar products, the masks by Personal Protective Equipment USA include “Nano Silver Antimicrobial Technology” which Parada said is supposed to be more comfortable and breathable.
Along with Vienna based groups, over 700 orders have been placed with businesses in the D.C. area so far.
“Orders keep pouring in,” he said.
In the near future, Parada said the company will be doing its own fundraiser to collect toys for kids at the Children’s Hospital in Fairfax. After his own son was previously diagnosed with stage four cancer at age three, Parada decided to help other kids fighting for their lives.

Updated 4:30 p.m. (Sept.11) — Dominion Energy plans to send the plans to the SCC for review by Oct. 1.Â
Dominion Energy has proposed a new underground electric transmission line to keep up with growing demand.
The 230-kilowatt line would replace an existing above-ground power line from Tyco Road to the area southwest of Leesburg Pike and Spring Hill Road, according to a presentation at last night’s community engagement meeting.
“There are currently over 60 million square feet of pending and approved zoning applications in Tysons,” documentation from Dominion Energy said. “This rapid growth requires updated infrastructure to meet the increased demand for energy.”
The upcoming substations will support mixed-use developments such as Dominion Square East, Dominion Square West and Sunburst Developments.
In regards to the upcoming development The View, a spokesperson said at the meeting that Dominion Energy is working with project developers and construction crews to create a timeline since the two projects will intersect.
During public comment at the meeting, people expressed concerned about delays for commuters which might be caused by the project.
“The plan will be to work closely with VDOT to maintain the traffic in the area,” a spokesperson said, adding that the majority of work will likely be done on off-hours, in order to avoid heavy traffic. “If we do have to close two lanes, the work will be done at night.”
If approved, Dominion Energy expects the project to be complete by 2025, a spokesperson said, adding that the company wants to send the plans to the State Corporation Commission by Oct. 1 for review.

As Conte’s Bike Shop celebrates its 5-year anniversary in Falls Church, the company announced it will be relocating to a larger location nearby.
The new location will be located at 1118 West Broad Street and open around Oct. 1, according to co-owner Wayne Souza.
It will include 3,767 square feet of space, which is significantly larger than its current location, Souza said.
“We needed a larger location because we needed more retail floor space, a larger service area and we took the opportunity to build the regions most state of the art fit studio,” he said. “We didn’t have the ability to grow where we were.”
Conte’s Bike Shop serves customers with a variety of skill levels, according to Souza.
Since the pandemic, locations across the area have been experiencing increased demand for products, the website said.
Though the store originated in the Virginia Beach area, Conte’s Bike Shop has locations around D.C. and Maryland too.
Once it is safe, the new Falls Church studio plans on celebrating the grand opening by hosting group bicycle rides around the area, Souza said, adding that the shop will be looking to USA Cycling for best practices regarding the health and safety of participants.
The hours of operation will be the same.
According to the Facebook page, people can stop by the store from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sundays.
Looking toward the future, Souza said that they are considering expansions for other locations as well.
