A crash early this morning led to a power outage and closure of Kirby Road that is still affecting people in McLean.

“A crash took out the pole” near the intersection of Kirby Road and Freedom Lane shortly after 11 p.m. last night (Monday), Sgt. Erica Webb, a Fairfax County police spokesperson, told Tysons Reporter.

The Fairfax County Police Department tweeted about the road closure at that intersection shortly this morning (Tuesday), adding that people can expect the closure to last “for an extended period due to downed wires.”

Police urged people to avoid the area and find another route.

As of 9 a.m., a police spokesperson told Tysons Reporter that the intersection is still closed.

Dominion Energy’s power outage map shows two outages in the area – one affecting 247 customers at the intersection of Kirby Road and Powhatan Street and another one affecting 214 customers spanning from Birch Road to Old Dominion Drive.

Both outages are expected to be resolved before 5 p.m., Peggy Fox, a spokesperson for Dominion Energy, told Tysons Reporter.

Fox said that repairs will include replacing the pole and wires.

Roughly 500 Dominion Energy customers are without power as a storm sweeps through the area on Halloween night.

One power outage is affecting 326 customers in McLean, spanning from Georgetown Pike to Route 694 just west of I-495.

Another one is affecting 228 customers where the Dulles Access Road intersects with Leesburg Pike above the Spring Hill Metro station in Tysons.

The causes of the outages are pending investigation, according to Dominion’s outage map.

Nearly 900 Dominion Energy customers are without power right in the Vienna area today (Thursday).

The outage is affecting 896 customers, spanning from Kemper Park to Malcolm Road NW.

Dominion expects the power to be back on between 7-10 p.m., according to the Dominion Energy power outage map.

The cause of the power outage is pending investigation.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to swoop in tonight.

Updated 10/25/19 — “It was a customer-request outage so work could be done on their end,” Peggy Fox, a spokesperson for Dominion Energy told Tysons Reporter. 

More than 230 Dominion Energy customers are without power near the intersection of International and Westpark drives above Tysons Galleria this morning (Thursday).

The outage is affecting 237 customers at the northwest corner of the intersection.

Crews are currently working to restore power, which Dominion expects to be back on between 2-5 p.m., according to the Dominion Energy power outage map.

The cause of the power outage is pending investigation.

As the windy day continues, two power outages are affecting about 50 Dominion Energy customers between Route 50 and Route 29 in the West Falls Church area.

One power outage is affecting 37 customers by Stuart Drive, while a second one is affecting 26 customers by Thomas Jefferson Library, according to Dominion.

Power is expected to be restored this evening before 10 p.m., according to Dominion.

The causes of the outages are pending investigations.

More than 160 Dominion Energy customers are without power near the Mosby neighborhood this morning (Thursday).

Dominion reports that an “equipment upgrade” caused the power outage, which is affecting 162 customers. The outage spans from Cherry to South streets between Hillwood Avenue and Route 50.

Crews are currently working to restore power, which Dominion expects to be back on between 2-5 p.m., according to the Dominion Energy power outage map.

Updated at 9:15 a.m. — A Dominion Energy spokesperson said at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday night that all of the power outages have been resolved.

Updated at 3:40 p.m. — Dominion Energy’s power outage map now shows five power outages affecting a total of 4,049 customers from Glyndon Street NE to I-66.

Earlier: Widespread power outages hit the Vienna area, leaving more than 4,000 Dominion Energy customers without power today (Wednesday).

An outage affecting 3,601 customers stretches from Glyndon Street NE in Vienna past the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station to Fairhill Elementary School, according to Dominion Energy’s power outage map.

Four other power outages affecting roughly 1,400 customers are also reported in the Vienna area.

The causes of the outages are pending investigation. Dominion expects power to be restored between 4-9 p.m.

A downed power line caused S. Center Street between Locust Street SE and E. Maple Avenue to close, the Town of Vienna tweeted at 3 p.m.

The Town of Vienna tweeted at 3:32 p.m. that activities at the Vienna Community Center have been canceled due to the power outage, which is expected to be resolved in two to four hours.

Update: Town phones are offline. Power expected to be repaired in 2-4 hrs. Please do not call police for power-related issues. Call 911 in case of an emergency.

Updated at 1:30 p.m. — The power outages were resolved around noon, a spokesperson for Dominion Energy told Tysons Reporter. 

More than 2,000 Dominion customers in the McLean area are without power this morning (Tuesday).

The Dominion Energy map shows two overlapping power outages east of Pimmit Run Stream Valley Park and Kent Gardens Park, stretching from Route 123 down to Powhatan Street.

Crews have been dispatched to the larger of the two outages, which was caused by an “equipment problem” and left 1,232 customers without power, according to Dominion. Power is expected to be restored there between 2-7 p.m., according to map.

Meanwhile, the outage south of Old Dominion Road is affecting 1,058 customers. Crews are currently assessing the damage, and the power is expected to be restored between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. today. The cause of the outage has not been determined yet.

Updated at 5 p.m. on 9/4/19 — Power was restored at 1:27 a.m. this morning (Wednesday). “The outage was caused when a third-party, non-Dominion contractor cut into one of our energized cables,” a Dominion Energy spokesperson said. 

Updated at 5:15 p.m. — Battalion Chief Steve McFarland told Tysons Reporter that said that the three workers were injured while installing a conduit box and that the power outage resulted because of the incident.

Updated at 4 p.m. — Three people were injured in an electrical incident at a job site in the 8200 block of Greensboro Drive, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue tweeted. 

One person was transported by the Fairfax County Police Department’s helicopter to a local burn center, while the other two people were driven to a local hospital. 

The Fairfax County Police Department tweeted that the three people had non-life threatening injuries. 

Sgt. Greg Bedor, a police spokesperson, told Tysons Reporter that the police department received the call about the incident at 3:30 p.m.

Earlier: More than a thousand people are without power along Greensboro Drive in Tysons this afternoon (Tuesday).

The outage spans east of the Greensboro to the Spring Hill Metro stations along Greensboro Drive and is affecting 1,555 customers, according to the Dominion Energy power outage map.

An employee at United Bank told Tysons Reporter that she heard what sounded like an explosion before the power went out around 3:30 p.m. — it is unclear if the loud sound is connected to the outage.

Dominion Energy expects power to be restored between 5-10 p.m. today (Sept. 3).

The cause of the outage is “pending investigation,” according to Dominion Energy.

The traffic signal is out at the intersection of International and Westpark drives, according to Fairfax County. The Fairfax County Police Department tweeted that traffic lights are out at Greensboro and Westpark drives.

After severe thunderstorms hit the area last night, around 100 people are left without electricity in Vienna.

Over by Maple Avenue and Lawyers Road NW, 56 customers are without power, while 57 people are left in the dark east of Wildwood Park. Both outages are due to power line damage, according to Dominion Energy.

Dominion Energy expects power to be restored between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. today (Aug. 20) for both spots.
