In a sequence of events that could’ve been ripped out of a pulpy crime thriller, a man in Vienna was reportedly taken for a ride and robbed at gunpoint — potentially by a trio spotted patronizing a local gun shop earlier that day.
Around 2:40 p.m. on April 9, the man was picked up by three men in a vehicle, one of them an acquaintance, at the Giant shopping center (359 Maple Avenue), according to the Vienna Police Department’s recap for the week of April 8-14.
“While they were driving around, the three men displayed handguns and announced a robbery, taking the citizen’s belongings,” police said. “The men allowed the citizen to exit the vehicle on Cabin Road where he ran to the nearest residence for assistance.”
With schools out for winter break, the Vienna Police Department has encountered some rowdy behavior from youngsters over the past few weeks.
According to the department’s crime report for Dec. 22 to Jan. 6, two juveniles are facing potential felony charges for property destruction and trespassing after they allegedly drove over and damaged Waters Field (130 Cherry Street SE) by the Vienna Community Center.
The incident occurred at 11:16 p.m. on Dec. 19:
A resident reported a vehicle driving recklessly on Waters Field, causing damage. An officer located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was occupied by two juveniles who were both taken into custody and transported to the Vienna Police Station. One juvenile was released to the custody of his step-father, the other was released to his adult sister. Petitions are pending.
In an unrelated event from around 7:57 p.m. that same evening, a woman reported to police that she was bedeviled by youths throwing Tide detergent pods at her vehicle while waiting at the Maple Avenue and Beulah Road stoplight:
A woman reported that she noticed a vehicle occupied by juveniles follow her as she left the 7-11 parking lot. While she was on Maple Avenue at the traffic light for Beulah Road, the juveniles threw Tide pods at her vehicle. Officers responded to the vehicle owner’s residence and found it was the owner’s sons and one of their friends who were in the vehicle throwing the pods. The woman did not wish to pursue charges.
Vienna police have also recently responded to some incidents involving adult residents, including a report of “an unknown situation between four men” in the Vienna Park apartments area on Cedar Lane.
The report that officers received at 6:35 p.m. on Dec. 26 indicated that three of the men appeared to be assaulting the fourth man, who was on the ground.
“All of the men entered an apartment before officers arrived,” the VPD said in its weekly crime report. “Officers spoke to the residents. The man who had been on the ground advised the officers that the other men were just helping him up and into the apartment and that no crime had occurred.”

Vienna Police Warn of “McAfee Antivirus” Scam — “The scam usually begins with an email that purports to be from McAfee informing citizens that they are being charged $300 for ‘McAfee Total Protection anti-virus software’ unless they cancel the order by calling a phone number provided in the email. On the eve of Election Day, the political agitation that has animated many a recent school board meeting, both locally and nationally, reportedly spilled out onto the streets of Vienna.
According to the Vienna Police Department’s latest weekly crime round-up, officers responded to the 500 block of Maple Avenue West at 3:39 p.m. last Monday (Nov. 1) after getting a report of a possible assault involving a business owner and political protestors.
Covering the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 4, the report says witnesses told police that “a Virginia-based parents group” was behind the protest:
Officers responded to the report of a possible assault between political protestors and a business owner. The business owner advised that he got into a verbal altercation and was pushed by one of the protestors. Other witnesses advised that the rally was being held by a Virginia-based parents group and that the business owner pushed his way into their group and began verbally abusing them.
The report doesn’t contain any further details about what the group was protesting.
Last week, police also responded to a resident’s report that a driver “yelled derogatory remarks and made a profane gesture” at her children while they were waiting for their school bus.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 3) at a bus stop on the corner of East Street and Hine Street SE.
That same day, another citizen reported an unnerving encounter that occurred between 8 and 8:44 p.m. on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail near the 100 block of Maple Avenue:
A citizen reported a suspicious event on the bike trail when a man repeatedly offered him a pizza and produced what appeared to be a gun when the citizen refused. The man then ran westbound on Maple Avenue. The citizen appeared to be emotionally disturbed but refused police assistance. Officers searched the area and found no one matching the description of the man the citizen described.
